Günther Erkel
Günther Erkel (born December 9, 1924 in Wiesbaden ; † December 5, 1993 in Bonn ) was a German legal scholar and State Secretary .
biography
During the Second World War he served as a soldier in the Wehrmacht from 1942 to 1945 and was taken prisoner there . After his release from captivity, he began studying law at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1946 and passed his first state examination in 1950 . After receiving his doctorate in law in 1952, he passed the second state examination in 1953.
He then became a judge in the district of the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt am Main in 1953 and then joined the Hessian Ministry of Justice in 1957 , where he was initially an advisor for public law . After his appointment to the government council in 1958, he became a consultant for civil law and civil procedure law . After his promotion to the Upper Government Council in 1960 he became deputy head of the civil law department.
In 1965 he became a consultant for legislation and individual matters in the fields of civil law with subsidiary laws, as well as competition law , copyright and patent law . At the same time, in this function, he was also deputy head of the public law department and was promoted to Ministerialrat in 1966 .
In 1967 he was appointed President of the Giessen Regional Court and held this office until 1970. In 1970 he moved to the Federal Ministry of Justice , where he was initially head of a department as ministerial director.
In 1971, Erkel, who was a member of the SPD , became State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Justice and held this office until the end of the Social-Liberal Coalition in 1982.
In his tenure, the negotiations fell to the GDR via a legal assistance treaties in 1974, but also the suicide of RAF - terrorists in prison Stuttgart -Stammheim.
In his capacity as Secretary of State he signed in 1978 next to the Secretary of State in the Foreign Office Günther van Well and US Ambassador Walter J. Stoessel, Jr. , among others, the extradition treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States .
