Gabriele "Gaby" Schaunig-Kandut (born May 3, 1965 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) is an Austrian lawyer , politician ( SPÖ ) and since 2013 regional councilor in the Carinthian regional government Kaiser II , since 2018 for the areas of finance, investments, development and research responsible. She is also the 2nd Deputy Governor.

Life

Gaby Schaunig began studying law at the University of Graz in 1983 , which she completed with a graduation (1987) and doctorate (1989). In addition to her work as a contract assistant and lecturer at the University of Graz (until 1993), she worked for the Chamber of Labor and Employees for Carinthia from 1990 onwards . From 2008 to 2011 she worked as a trainee lawyer. After passing the bar exam in 2011, she started her own business as a lawyer.

From 1999 Gaby Schaunig was regional councilor for social affairs in the Carinthian regional government . In autumn 2005 she was elected party chairwoman of the SPÖ Carinthia, replacing Peter Ambrozy , who had been unsuccessful in three state elections against Jörg Haider . She also took over his post as Deputy Governor on November 23, 2005. After the termination of the labor agreement with the BZÖ (formerly FPÖ ) on February 28, 2006, she sought new elections and the office of governor.

On July 8, 2008, Schaunig surprisingly announced her retirement from politics and thus her resignation as state party leader of the SPÖ Carinthia and deputy governor. Schaunig's successor in both functions was the then Regional Councilor Reinhart Rohr . In a press conference, Schaunig named Jörg Haider as the main motive for her resignation. Because of him, a “political unculture” had taken hold, which meant that she was no longer willing “to work in and around Jörg Haider”.

As a social state councilor, Gaby Schaunig was particularly committed to the living conditions and living conditions of cognitively disabled people. She wrote and published a needs and development plan to outsource people with disabilities from large care facilities and to implement the principle of normalization . Thanks to their commitment, Caritas. The team also implement social space-oriented facilities for severely disabled adults.

In 2013 she returned to politics and since March 2013 has been the second deputy governor under Peter Kaiser . From 2013 to 2018, she was responsible for the following departments: Finance, Housing, Municipalities, Employee Development. She is the technology consultant for the state of Carinthia. From March 2015, she began negotiations on the part of the State of Carinthia with the creditors of the mining bank HETA. The negotiations were successfully concluded in 2016.

In the current legislative period, Schaunig has been the 2nd Deputy Governor and State Councilor since April 12, 2018, responsible for the areas of finance, investments, development and research.

Private

Gaby Schaunig is married and lives in Wölfnitz near Klagenfurt. She has a daughter.
