Garret Augustus Hobart (born June 3, 1844 in Long Branch , New Jersey , †  November 21, 1899 in Paterson , New Jersey) was an American politician and from 1897 until his death the 24th  Vice President of the United States .

Garret Hobart was born in Long Branch in 1844 to Addison and Sophia Hobart and grew up in Marlboro Township , New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University and graduated as a lawyer in 1863. He was also a member of the fraternity Delta Phi .

In 1871 Hobart was a member of Paterson City Council. From 1872 to 1876 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly , from 1874 on he served as the Speaker of the Chamber of Parliament. From 1876 to 1882 he was a member of the New Jersey Senate , from 1881 he was its chairman. In 1883 he ran for the US Senate , but was defeated by the Democrat John R. McPherson .

In the primaries of the Republican Party in 1896, he was appointed as his running mate of William McKinley nominated candidate for the office of vice president and was after her election victory vice president. He took up this position on March 4, 1897. During his tenure, his wife Jennie Tuttle Hobart often took on the duties of first lady because the president's wife, Ida McKinley , was suffering from epileptic seizures.

Hobart served in that office until his sudden death on November 21, 1899. He died of heart failure and was buried in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Paterson. The post of Vice-President remained vacant after his death, before Theodore Roosevelt took over this office after the following presidential election in 1900 .
