Gaspare Mattei (* 1598 in Rome ; † April 9, 1650 ibid) was an Italian Catholic cardinal and archbishop .

biography

He comes from the aristocratic Mattei family and is the son of Mario Mattei, Duke of Paganica and Prudenzia Cenci. Mattei is a relative of Pope Paul V and nephew of Cardinal Tiberio Cenci . He studied law at La Sapienza University in Rome. His parents hoped that he would be the eldest son to marry the girl Gaspar was in love with, but he decided instead to begin his ecclesiastical career during the pontificate of Paul V in the Roman Curia .

He held various offices as governor in the cities of the Papal States: San Severino Marche , Forlì , Urbino , Perugia .

On September 5, 1639 he was elected titular archbishop of Athens . Then he was sent to the emperor in Austria as apostolic nuncio .

In the consistory of July 13, 1643 he was appointed cardinal by Pope Urban VIII and on November 14 of the same year he received the titular church of San Pancrazio fuori le mura . He decided on September 28, 1648 for the titular church Santa Cecilia in Trastevere .

He took part in the conclave of 1644 , which Pope Innocent X elected, but had to leave the conclave before the election due to illness.

He died in Rome and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Cecilia
