occupation

Gassenhauer is a film drama and musical film of the actor and director Lupu Pick from 1931. In the lead roles embody Ernst Busch as Peter and Albert Hörrmann as Paul, the members of a five-member singing group who are suspected of the murder.

action

Berlin at the beginning of the 20th century. The members of a five-person singing group live in poor conditions for rent in a neglected rear building. When the manager of the property is murdered, Peter and Paul, both members of that singing group, are suspected of murder. When they come back from a gig, the police are waiting for them to arrest both of them and subject them to police questioning. Since Paul is the most likely perpetrator for the investigating authorities, he is arrested directly. However, his friend Peter knows about Paul's innocence and cannot allow the arrest, also because he knows how much Marie, a mutual acquaintance, has taken Paul into her heart.

Convinced of Paul's innocence and in the belief that everything will turn out fine and clear, Peter files a police report against himself and claims to have killed the property manager. So his friend Paul is out of sight of the police and Peter goes to prison in his place.

In the meantime, the four remaining members of the singing group were offered an engagement in a dance palace, in which they could live out their qualities, the imitation of various musical instruments, with their voices alone in front of an audience. Shortly thereafter, they were hoarding a considerable fortune and were able to leave their poor housing.

In prison, Peter takes advantage of the hour to attempt to escape. Having escaped from prison, he meets with Marie, who had previously looked after the singing group. The police were not completely inactive in the meantime, because the detective inspector had considerable doubts about Paul's confession from the start. Meanwhile, he has identified the real culprit.
