Gate: Jieitai Kano Chi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri ( Japanese ゲ ー ト 自衛隊 彼 の 地 に て 、 斯 く 戦 え り , Gēto: ~ , Eng. "Tor: This is how the self-defense forces fought in that place") is a series of novels by Takumi Yanai . The work has also been adapted as a manga , and since July 2015 as an anime series that is also being released in German-speaking countries.

action

One day a "gate" opens in the middle of Tokyo's busiest shopping district, Ginza , from which an army of monsters and ancient soldiers streaks and causes a massacre, but after a brief moment of surprise, the Japanese army (SDF) and police beat them back . It turns out that the enemy army comes from another world where magic exists but which otherwise largely corresponds to the Roman Empire from a cultural and technological point of view . The Japanese government is sending the SDF to the other side of the gate - which it calls the "Special Region" - to build a bridgehead there to secure their country and to force those guilty of this attack to negotiate.

The protagonist of the action is First Lieutenant Yōji Itami ( 伊丹 耀 司 ) , a 33-year-old certified Special Forces soldier, otaku and idler, whose meaning in life he sees only in his hobby. During the invasion of Ginza, where he happened to be attending a doujinshi event, he brings a large number of civilians to safety and organizes the first defense efforts, which is why he is celebrated as a hero and receives a promotion. On the other side of the gate, he is sent on exploratory missions to learn more about the world and its inhabitants, and befriends the high elf Tuka Luna Marceau ( テ ュ カ ・ ル ナ ・ マ ル ソ ー , Tyuka Runa Marusō ) ; the young magician Lelei La Lelena ( レ レ イ ・ ラ ・ レ レ ー ナ , Rerei Ra Rerēna ) , who learned the Japanese language very quickly and therefore worked as a translator and mediator between the two cultures; Rory Mercury ( ロゥリィ·マーキュリー , Rourii Mākyurī ) , an immortal demigoddess and apostle of the death of God Emroy ( エムロイ , Emuroi ) ; and with the dark elf Yao Haa Dushi ( ヤ オ ・ ハ ー ・ デ ュ ッ シ , Yao Hā Dyusshi ) .

Itami and his squad take part in various peace missions and humanitarian missions during their stay in the Special Region and are gradually gaining the trust of the population. After she helped the imperial princess Piña Co Lada ( ピ ニ ャ ・ コ ・ ラ ー ダ , Pinya Ko Rāda ) fight a bandit horde and this witness of the technical superiority of the Japanese army, the princess tries everything to protect her father, Emperor Molto Sol Augustus ( モ ル ト ・ ソ ル ・ ア ウ グ ス タ ス , Moruto Soru Augusutasu ) to seek peace with the Japanese government. However, the peace efforts are threatened by hostile elements: the US, Russia and China envy Japan for their free access to this new world, which represents a new, untouched source of resources for them; and the emperor's eldest son, the arrogant and insane Zorzal El Caesar ( ゾ ル ザ ル ・ エ ル ・ カ エ サ ル , Zoruzaru Eru Kaesaru ) , seeks revenge on the Japanese after Itami freed a Japanese prisoner from his clutches and humiliated him badly. Zorzal rises himself emperor and prepares to instigate a new war against Japan, which threatens to bring the empire to the brink of annihilation. The SDF sees itself forced to intervene actively in the political events of the country in order to maintain the status quo and the chance for a bilateral peace.

publication

Former soldier Takumi Yanai originally published the novel under the pseudonym Todoku Takusan ( と ど く = た く さ ん ) on the Arcadia website , where users can post self-written stories. From April 2006 to June 2009 three digital volumes were created. In 2010 the publishing house AlphaPolis became aware of him and offered him to publish the novel professionally. The first two volumes differ only slightly in their printed form from their web versions, in which the political criticism they contain has been defused - therefore referred to by the author as a "slightly toxic version" ( 弱毒 版 , jakudokuban ) - while the final volume of the web novel was rewritten and was extended to three printed volumes. From April 2010 to December 2011, five volumes were published by AlphaPolis:

Following these volumes, a number of side stories ( gaiden ) have been published since September 2012 , which take place after the main plot is over :

  • Gaiden: Nankai Hyōryū-hen ( 外 伝 南海 漂流 編 ), September 25, 2012, ISBN 978-4-434-17129-1 .
  • Gaiden Ni: Kurokami no Taisaiten-hen ( 外 伝 弐 黒 神 の 大 祭典 編 ), July 25, 2013, ISBN 978-4-434-18173-3 .
  • Gaiden San: Tasogare no Ryūkishi Densetsu-hen ( 外 伝 参 黄昏 の 竜 騎士 伝 説 編 ), April 22, 2014, ISBN 978-4-434-19120-6 .
  • Gaiden Yon: Hakugin no Shōki-hen ( 外 伝 四 白銀 の 晶 姫 編 ), December 23, 2014, ISBN 978-4-434-20085-4 .
  • Gaiden +: Tokuchi Meikyū Kōryaku-hen ( 外 伝 + 特地 迷宮 攻略 編 ), June 23, 2015, ISBN 978-4-434-20742-6 .

The cover illustrations of the five main volumes and gaiden are by Daisuke Izuka.

Since December 2012 a new edition has been published as a light novel , ie in Bunkoban format and with accompanying illustrations. One volume of the original edition in JIS-B6 paper format corresponds to two volumes of the new edition in the smaller DIN-A6 format. The illustrations in this issue are from Kurojishi.

The novel series was in 2013 with 170,000 copies sold in 26th place of the best-selling light novels and only one of the few by a small publisher in this list. While the series (novels and manga) sold around 1.5 million copies by December 2014, this rose to 2.4 million copies after the anime was announced in June 2015.

At the initiative of Takumi Yanai, the Self-Defense Forces in the Tokyo area are advertising new recruits with posters for the anime series.
