activities

Business activity

Gebhard Schwärzler's father was already active in textile production from 1800 and began in 1816 as one of the first in Vorarlberg with the colored weaving and from 1823 to 1843 with the production of cotton goods. The son worked early and took over the cotton goods production in 1843 and in 1847, after the death of his father, the other businesses as a universal heir, although these businesses continued to operate under the Jos. Schwärzler were operated. Around 1842 Gebhard Schwärzler also ran a general store, which he ran until 1878, when his son Josef took over.

In 1849, manufacturers in Vorarlberg, u. a. Schwärzler and Carl Ganahl founded an association of Vorarlberg's industrialists , which was forbidden by the authorities. Before 1851 he had a quarry built in the Schwarzachtobel, which he operated until 1871 (see also: Schwarzachtobler sandstone ).

In 1858 Gebhard Schwärzler built a three-storey factory building near the Schwarzach for a twisting, winding and weaving mill, which still exists today , and the water is diverted to operate a waterwheel . A first steam engine was also installed around 1865 . 1883 sold Schwaerzler the factory for 20,000 guilders to the company FM Hämmerle in Dornbirn . From 1863 he was engaged in a silkworm breeding and planted mulberry trees .

Political activity

Schwärzler was a member of the community committee and was elected mayor in Schwarzach in 1857 and held this office until 1875.

For the first time Schwärzler was elected to the Vorarlberg state parliament ( 1st legislative period , 1861–1867) (rural community Bregenz-Bregenzerwald) in 1865 and represented a conservative political stance. He was then re- elected to the state parliament in 1868–1870 ( second legislative period ).

Others

Gebhard Schwärzler played a key role in determining the route of the Lindau – Bludenz railway through the lower Alpine Rhine Valley , so that the community of Schwarzach has its own train station to this day. At the same time he tried by many means to ensure that other communities did not benefit from this station to the same extent. In this way, he wanted to prevent Walter Zuppinger from gaining quick access to his factory and providing a convenient connection to Rickenbach ( Wolfurt ). The Bahnhofstrasse, which today still leads in a straight line from the Schwarzach train station to Rickenbach, had to be fought for against the bitter resistance of Schwärzler.

His personal and financial commitment to founding the Valduna charity (today: Rankweil State Hospital ) continues to have an impact today. The work carried out under Schwärzler to create arcades in the cemetery from 1868 shaped the site.

In 1869 Schwärzler organized the first industrial and commercial exhibition in Vorarlberg, which took place in Schwarzach from October 3rd to October 14th ( chairman of the exhibition committee ).

In the spring of 1872, Schwärzler had the Bregenzerwald Inn (also called Wälderhof ) built directly opposite the station building, which was run by his son Carl Bernhard until 1879. The inn was sold in 1879 and the building - like the previous train station - demolished in 1978.

Honor

A street in the community of Schwarzach was named after Gebhard Schwärzler, which he had made possible in 1870/1871 with considerable financial resources and by transferring land in order to enable a direct connection with the town center and the then newly built Schwarzach train station.

Trivia

On the basis of a vow because of his serious illness, he promised to build a Lourdes chapel (see: Lourdes Chapel (Schwarzach) ).
