Rescue engineering (formerly Rescue Engineering ) is an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree program at the Technical University of Cologne (since winter semester 2002) and at the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg (since summer semester 2006). It includes basically an academic- scientific engineering basic study . In the later main course, skills in leadership, organization and management of companies and organization of the rescue service , i.e. fire brigades , rescue services and other aid organizations, are taught.

Colleges

Rescue Engineering is so far due to the specialization and the short history since 2002 at the Technical University of Cologne in Engineering Sciences Center (IWZ) at the Faculty of Engineering, Energy and Mechanical Systems (F09) and at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg at the Faculty of Life Sciences taught . The prerequisites are the general technical college entrance qualification and a twelve-week internship (TH Köln) or thirteen weeks of subject-related preliminary work experience in rescue / engineering (HAW Hamburg). RE is a full-time course with lectures and exercises and internships to be completed. The technical support, specialist lecturers and the contact to the economy are ensured both in Hamburg and in Cologne through the cooperation with the respective institutes for emergency medicine and the professional fire brigades .

In Cologne and Hamburg, the academic degree “ Bachelor of Engineering”, ie an engineering degree, is awarded. The three-semester Master's degree in Rescue Engineering “ Master of Science” (M.Sc.) and the seven-semester Bachelor's degree at the TH Köln and the HAW Hamburg have been successfully accredited by the ASIIN accreditation agency .

content

The curriculum includes similar to the one industrial engineer engineering and economics subjects and is complemented by specialized and social science basics. Different modules are taught depending on the university.

Engineering subjects

The first semesters of the course are mainly characterized by engineering. In addition to the basics in mathematics , physics and chemistry , knowledge in the areas of mechanics , materials science , electrical engineering and measurement technology is imparted. These subjects are supplemented by lectures in the field of structural engineering , communication technology and vehicle technology . In the new study regulations of the TH Köln (from WS 05) the modules Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Mathematics II / Integral and Statistics are now included in order to underline the engineering degree.

Economics and Management

Since executives always have to make economic decisions, Rescue Engineering teaches basic knowledge of business administration such as accounting and investment calculation . In addition, personnel management , law, logistics , as well as quality and project management belong to the lecture contents. In Cologne, the qualification to become a quality officer can be achieved through contact with TÜV parallel to the course .

Subject-specific subjects

A large part of the teaching content is made up of subject-specific topics. These include classic areas such as occupational safety , safety technology , radiation protection , but also specific lectures on the areas of work in hazard prevention, such as requirements planning, operational theory and tactics or disaster control .

Social science subjects

In order to take into account the increasing importance of social influences and human behavior on practical work in hazard prevention, the curriculum was expanded to include subjects such as social medicine , psychology and sociology .

job

Operational area

The graduates can with the Bachelor into the elevated service and with the master in the higher service at authorities , such as fire departments ( defense of fire ) or government organizations , such as the Agency for Technical Relief aboard. Probably the greatest need is found in private aid organizations in the rescue service .

Development & planning

Industry and trade as well as engineering offices in preventive fire protection can be possible career goals.

Hazard control

Since the 2007/2008 winter semester, the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences has been offering the Hazard Control (B. Eng.) (Formerly Hazard Control) course. The contents of the course range from engineering fundamentals to the contents of fire fighting training, disaster control and non-police hazard prevention to economic and social science issues. The course was developed in collaboration with the Hamburg Fire Brigade. Some of the lectures are held by lecturers from the Fire Brigade Academy Hamburg. The Hamburg fire brigade terminated the cooperation agreement with the university in 2012. The course was suspended in the 2013/14 winter semester and continued in the following winter semester with new examination regulations.

The focus of the "Hazard Control" course (formerly Hazard Control) is more on preventive hazard control. For example, the course "Preventive Fire Protection" is implemented in the curriculum. In addition, content on toxicology and ecotoxicology is dealt with and more extensive chemical knowledge is imparted than is the case with "Rescue Engineering". Emergency medicine, on the other hand, plays a subordinate role.

The professional field of engineers in hazard prevention / hazard control is versatile. Possible fields of activity are:

  • Hazard prevention and disaster control in state institutions
  • Management tasks in fire brigades
  • Risk and safety management in industrial, utility and transport companies as well as in hospitals
  • Expert and expert work for damage insurers
  • Services in the field of security planning and security consulting (e.g. in architectural and engineering offices)
  • Product development at manufacturers of fire fighting and security technology
  • Specialized journalism and public relations
  • Management functions in international aid projects

Security and security

Since the 2003/2004 winter semester, the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and the University of Magdeburg have jointly offered the Safety and Security (B. Sc.) Course. There is close cooperation with the Institute of Fire Brigade Saxony-Anhalt and the Institute for Fire and Disaster Protection Heyrothsberge .

In terms of content, the course is similar to Hazard Control, but more emphasis is placed on industrial safety and preventive fire protection. The exact field of study can be individually influenced by elective subjects.

A consecutive master’s degree (M. Sc.) Is also offered, which has been subdivided into the specializations "Fire Protection" and "Industrial Safety" since the end of 2011.
