occupation

Secrets in Golden Nylons is a German-French-Italian agent film from 1967 by Christian-Jaque with Peter Lawford and Ira von Fürstenberg in the leading roles.

action

Carlos is a little crook and pickpocket who goes about his daily business with difficulty. One day in late winter Berlin he has to watch an American diplomat being attacked. Carlos recognizes the moment's favor and uses the general scuffle and helplessness of the diplomat to take his briefcase with apparently important documents and pile it up with them. With that, Carlos reluctantly got between the fronts of all interested parties. Soon he is being hunted by international secret services, for example in the form of the US agent Stephen Daine from the CIA but also his opponent Bardieff from the KGB . But even unscrupulous, internationally active gangsters are after him: they all have one thing in common: the intention to hunt down the secret documents from Carlos.

Carlos and his rogue partner Anna are hunted all over Western Europe, the hunt goes from Switzerland via Paris to Vienna, where Carlos wants to sell the papers to a man named Klaus. To see what fat booty he has landed, Carlos opens the briefcase with the fence. He wants to get rid of the explosive documents deposited there as soon as possible, if possible with a decent profit. While CIA agent Daine, who incidentally finds time for a quibble with Suzanne Belmont, the beautiful eyewitness of the initial diplomatic attack, at least keeps certain rules of the game, the gangsters on Carlos' footsteps are far less squeamish. Above all, Manganne, the wheat-blonde killer with excellent manners, who makes a pact with the KGB and does Bardieff's dirty work, does not shy away from drastic means. In the end, the shrewd Carlos can save his skin and continue his lively goings-on as a clever trick thief.

Production notes

Secrets in Golden Nylons was filmed from February 14th to April 11th, 1967. The shooting locations were Vienna, Lucerne, Paris and the CCC studios in Berlin-Spandau. The world premiere was on August 11, 1967 in Paris, the German premiere on September 21, 1967. The film also started on that day in Italy, which was also co-producing. The international distribution title was based on the novel Dead Run .

The film structures were designed by Hans-Jürgen Kiebach , Werner Müssig was responsible for the sound. On the German side, Peter Hahne was in charge of production.

The German title refers to the place where the stolen secret papers were hiding in Anna's (Maria Grazia Buccella) stockings. The original French title Deux billets pour Mexico is completely irrelevant for the content of the film. It refers to the two plane tickets to the said Central American country, which Carlos takes from a wallet towards the end of the strip.

Reviews

"Moderately exciting agent film based on a tried and tested model."

"Boring, but Lawford and the nice on-site footage help a little."

- Leonard Maltin : Movie & Video Guide, 1996 edition, p. 312

“After an excellent novel from the 'black series' (this is) a poorly implemented film that also suffers from the constraints of an international co-production: the portrayal is too unequal and the director abandons himself too much to tourist prospects seduce. "

- Télé Loisirs. Issue No. 81 from September 1987, p. 59

“A useful parody of the wave of agents could have been made out of the idea, but unfortunately this agent film by the formerly very successful director Christian-Jaque remains stuck in the cliché. Therefore not worth looking at, if necessary, only for completely undaunted adults! "
