Geoffroy d'Aspremont Lynden

Geoffroy, comte d'Aspremont Lynden (born January 10, 1904 in Brussels , † September 24, 1979 in Natoye ) was a Belgian diplomat who came from the noble family d'Aspremont Lynden .

Life

Geoffrey d'Aspremont Lynden graduated from high school with Graecum and Latinum at a high school run by Benedictines at Maredsous Abbey . In 1927 he received his doctorate in law and a bachelor's degree in political science from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . In 1928 he married Ghislaine Michel de Pierredon. The couple had five children.

In 1930 he entered the foreign service and became legation secretary in Belgrade , where he represented Charles de Romrée de Vichenet as chargé d'affaires . In 1932 he advised Prime Minister Charles de Broqueville in Brussels on the Locarno Treaties . In 1937 he became legation secretary in Warsaw and from September 1 to 29, 1939, during the Battle of Warsaw , he looked after the Belgian community of Warsaw. Geoffroy d'Aspremont Lynden accompanied Niels Christian Ditleff , Norwegian envoy, doyen of the diplomatic corps of Warsaw, to negotiations for the first ceasefire of the Second World War, to the evacuation of around 1,400 diplomats from Warsaw.

From 1939 to 1945 he was in contact with the Belgian government in exile in London and carried out the tasks assigned to him with courage and skill. From 1944 to 1945 he was counselor in Paris . From 1945 to 1946 he was chargé d'affaires in Rome . He was commissioned to arrange the succession of Adriano Nieuwenhuys by Prince Reginaldo De Cröy at the Holy See.

In 1947 he became envoy in Beirut , where he was also accredited to the government of Shukri al-Quwatli in Damascus and had exequatur as consul general for Jerusalem .

From 1953 to 1954 he headed the United Nations Department in Paul-Henri Spaak's Foreign Ministry . From 1954 to 1958 he was ambassador to New Delhi , and accredited to the government of Mohammed Sahir Shah in Kabul . From 1959 to 1962 he was ambassador to Athens .

In 1962, Geoffroy d'Aspremont-Lynden was the last Belgian ambassador to Quirinal to reside in the Villa Doria Pamphili

He spent his retirement with his wife Ghislaine in Brussels and with their brother Géraud Michel de Pierredon, who lives at the Chateau de la Roche in Gençay and maintains the history of the Order of Malta. After the death of his wife in 1972, he and his niece Beatrice d'Aspremont moved to the Château de Mouffrin in Natoye.
