Monsignor Georg Austen (April 1, 2019)

Georg Austen (born December 3, 1958 in Salzkotten ) is general secretary of the Bonifatiuswerk of German Catholics and secretary of the diaspora commissariat of the German bishops.

Life

Georg Austen grew up in Brenken , a district of the East Westphalian town of Büren . After graduating from high school in 1978 at the Mauritius-Gymnasium in Büren, he studied Catholic theology in Paderborn and Munich . He then completed his diaconate in the parish of St. Johannes Baptist and in the correctional facility in Herford in 1985 and 1986 . On May 16, 1986, he received the sacrament of ordination in Paderborn . He then worked as a vicar in the parish of St. Marien in Fröndenberg, as a parish administrator in the parish of St. St. Johannes Baptist in Siddinghausen and in the parish of St. Michael in Weine . In addition, he was diocesan president of the Catholic rural youth movement and from 1996 to 2002 diocesan pastor of the Federation of German Catholic Youth in the Archdiocese of Paderborn as well as student pastor and head of the Catholic university community in Paderborn.

As secretary of the XX. From 2002 to July 2006, Austen played a key role in the preparation of the major Catholic event in 2005 for the World Youth Day of the German Bishops' Conference in Cologne . He was responsible for the pastoral preparation and follow-up of the World Youth Day, the days of encounter with the Day of Social Engagement in all German (arch) dioceses , the culture and youth festival at the World Youth Day in Cologne and the pilgrimage of the World Youth Day Cross through Europe and Germany. Following the XX. On World Youth Day, Austen spent several months in New York City and Sweden on personal training . After his return, he became the managing director of the "Perspective 2014" steering group in the Archdiocese of Paderborn in the same year.

Since March 2008 Georg Austen has been General Secretary and General Manager of the Bonifatiuswerk of German Catholics as well as Managing Director of the Diaspora Commission of the German Bishops / Diaspora Aid for Priests. In 2013, Austen was confirmed in office for a further six years. The second term began on March 1, 2014.

In May 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Austen to the papal honorary chaplain ( monsignor ) and appointed him in December 2011 to the college of consultors of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization . Austen is an advisor in the sub-commission for missionary issues of the World Church Commission of the German Bishops' Conference, a member of the World Church Conference and of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZDK).

Austen is committed to dialogue and solidarity-based cooperation in the world church and for marginalized groups, for example in prison work , and advocates young people. To this end, he founded the “Georg Austen Solidarity Foundation” in 2011 with the aim of conveying values, discovering faith and promoting personality. Appropriate project funding is intended to help children and young people to strengthen their confidence in their own abilities, to overcome life crises, to promote a sense of solidarity and, last but not least, to experience orientation and confidence from the Christian faith.

In the Holy Year of Mercy , on February 10, 2016, Pope Francis appointed Austen a “Mercy Missionary”.

It is an important concern of Austen - in cooperation with national and international artists and organizers of major events - to create points of contact with topics of art, culture and the church in order to stimulate a dialogue with those who think and believe differently. Nationwide concert series, benefit events, book projects and art exhibitions have already been organized. The proceeds go to charitable projects. In 2017 and 2018 two art exhibitions under the title “Udo's 10 Commandments” with pictures of the singer Udo Lindenberg were realized in the Gaukirche in Paderborn and in the Überwasserkirche in Münster. In cooperation with Michael Patrick Kelly there were two series of concerts (“Agape Tour” in 2012 and “Ruah Tour” in 2016) through several churches and cathedrals in German-speaking countries. In the course of the Santa Claus campaign of the Bonifatiuswerk under the title "Santa Claus Free Zone" there has been a close collaboration with the singer Maite Kelly for many years . There were other collaborations with the singer Kathy Kelly , the tenor Juan del Bosco and the gospel singer Carla A. Harris from New York, the singer Judy Bailey , the street musician Simone Oberstein and the Rügen artist Sylvia Vandermeer .
