Johann Georg Dieffenbach (born June 11, 1787 in Zwingenberg (Bergstrasse) ; † May 21, 1848 ibid) was an innkeeper and a liberal Hessian politician and former member of the 2nd Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

family

Georg Dieffenbach was the son of the innkeeper Christian Wilhelm Dieffenbach (1752-1791) and his wife Anna Margarethe nee Karste, widowed Büchler (1754-1815). His grandfather, Christian Heinrich Dieffenbach , who came from Auerbach , bought the Gasthaus zum Colorful Löwen in 1751 , which the Dieffenbach family ran for 147 years.

Georg Dieffenbach married Eva Sophie née Oberndörfer (1788-1824) in Jugenheim on September 6, 1811 , the daughter of the forester Christoph Oberndörfer and his wife Eva née Schüßler. The marriage had six children. After his first wife died in childbed on October 26, 1824 , he married his second wife Luise nee Sickenius (1793-1853), the daughter of the war cashier Georg Ludwig and his wife nee Meyer von Zwingenberg in 1826. The second marriage was childless.

His son Christian Dieffenbach took over the inn in 1848.

education and profession

Georg Dieffenbach, famous under the nickname "Zeitgeist", received school lessons from the private tutor of Count Ernst von Erbach-Schönberg, who lived in Zwingenberg . His early years were shaped by his mother's marital conflicts. After the death of her first husband in 1793, she married the wagon owner Johann Michael Roll from Stuttgart. On March 16, 1812, the marriage was divorced by mutual agreement. After his confirmation he learned French from the pastor of the French community in Neu-Isenburg , which was then the world language. Due to the early death of his father, he took over the management of his father's inn when he came of age.

politics

After the Wars of Liberation , a constitutional movement developed in parts of the Grand Duchy of Hesse , calling for a constitution for the Grand Duchy, which was promised in Section 13 of the German Federal Act .

The Grand Duke was a staunch supporter of the monarchical principle and was critical of demands to restrict his power.

In the winter of 1818/1819 a number of towns and municipalities in the Grand Duchy elected “wild” state parliaments without the consent of the government. These met in Grünberg and Zwingenberg. In Zwingenberg, Georg Dieffenbach was the movement's spokesman and made the Colorful Lions available as a meeting room for the “wild” state parliament. On February 18 and March 17, 1819 , around 200 citizens of the whole province of Starkenburg came together in the Löwen to emphasize the demand for a constitution.

On December 17, 1820, the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Hesse was enacted.

In the 5th and 6th electoral periods (1832-1834) Georg Dieffenbach was a member of the second chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. In the estates he represented the constituency Starkenburg 2 / Zwingenberg .

Georg Dieffenbach was also active in local politics, a city councilor since his youth and an alderman of the city of Zwingenberg from 1822 (he had refused the office of mayor). He was also a member of the church council and the poor commission.
