Georg Raab (born June 30, 1869 in Bickenbach , † February 2, 1932 in Pfungstadt ) was a politician ( SPD ) and member of the Hessian state parliament and minister of the people's state of Hesse .

education and profession

Georg Raab was born in 1869 as the son of a tobacco worker and after completing elementary school (he attended eight classes at three different schools) he also worked in this profession until 1907, most recently as a works manager in Pfungstadt, Mainz, Biebrich and Darmstadt.

Raab was married to Elisabeth, geb. Fey, (1869–1947) and Protestant denomination.

politics

Georg Raab was a social democrat, probably one of the founders of the Pfungstädter local association. From January 1907 to November 1918 he was the full-time party secretary of his party in Darmstadt . In 1914 he became chairman of the SPD in Pfungstadt. In terms of local politics, he was active as a councilor in Pfungstadt between 1904 and 1919.

Georg Raab was a member of the second chamber of the (estate) grand-ducal-Hessian state parliament from 1905 to 1918 and the parliament of the People's State of Hesse from 1918 to 1931. In November 1905 he was elected to the state parliament of the Grand Duchy of Hesse for the first time . He maintained his mandate in the elections in 1908, 1911 and 1914.

In November 1918, Carl Ulrich , also a social democratic member of the “old” state parliament, proclaimed the “socialist republic” in Darmstadt. Carl Ulrich became Prime Minister, Georg Raab became “Director of the Ministerial Department for the State, Employment and Economics Office” on November 11, 1918, and after the state election of 1919 Minister for Economics and Labor in the Ulrich I cabinet .

In the election for the constituent people's chamber on January 26, 1919, the SPD missed an absolute majority; all Hessian state parliaments until 1931 were governed by a coalition government made up of the SPD, the German Democratic Party and the Center. Georg Raab remained a minister until 1928 and a member of the state parliament until 1931.

Other offices

Georg Raab was a longstanding member of the trade unions and their predecessor organizations. In 1893 he represented the Pfungstadt workers in Berlin as a delegate at the "Tobacco Workers Congress". From 1888 to 1897 he was the agent of the branch of the tobacco workers' union and from 1896 to 1910 chairman of the union cartel . He co-founded the first “workers' committees” in Pfungstadt, preliminary forms for the works council.

Honors

Georg-Raab-Straße in Pfungstadt is named after Georg Raab.
