Georg Göth (born December 29, 1803 in Reindorf near Vienna (now part of the 15th district of Vienna ); † March 4, 1873 in Graz ) was an Austrian historian and naturalist .

Live and act

Göth attended lectures at the University of Vienna and in December 1827 took the position of educator in a family of civil servants in Gusswerk near Mariazell . It was there that Archduke Johann met him, who at that time was renovating his Brandhof country estate near Gußwerk. The Archduke gave Göth various tasks in the Agricultural Society for Styria he founded and hired him as secretary from 1830 . Göth cataloged the archduke's library and his collection of documents and the collection of paintings . He accompanied the Archduke on his annual tours of the more than 45 branches of the Agricultural Society throughout Styria.

In 1832 Göth published a description of the Archduke's Brandhof agricultural model farm and in 1839 his monograph on the iron industry in Vordernberg followed , with the title: “Vordernberg in the recent times or historical description of the union of the wheelworks together with a description of the mining and smelting operations there”.

For his economic and social reforms in Styria, Archduke Johann wanted as precise data as possible about Styria, its residents and the services of the public institutions. For this he arranged statistical surveys of the country. Georg Göth was commissioned with the second survey in 1836, who also evaluated this survey. Between 1840 and 1843 the first three volumes of his Ortskunde der Steiermark appeared under the title “Das Herzogthum Steiermark, geographically-statistically-topographically represented”, they concerned a general overview as well as the Brucker Kreis and the Judenburger Kreis . The fourth volume on the Grazer Kreis is only available in handwritten form and is in the Styrian State Archives . Since the political division of the country completely changed in 1848 and in the following years, the work was no longer completed. The present volumes are still an interesting and detailed source of historical data for historians.

In 1841 Göth was appointed professor of mathematics at the technical college of the Joanneum in Graz. From 1862 to 1865 he was director of studies at the technical college from which the Technical University of Graz emerged . At the same time he was curator of the natural history museums and the associated archives and collections. He was also secretary from 1852 and director of the Historical Society for Styria from 1861 to 1868. He was therefore one of the most important employees of Archduke Johann and of several economic and scientific institutions founded by him.
