Georg Hauer (also Hawer , Hauerius or Haverius ) (* 1484 in Tirschenreuth ; † 23 August 1536 in Ingolstadt ) was a German philologist , Catholic theologian , pastor and professor of canon law in Ingolstadt. He wrote what was then an influential Latin grammar.

Georg Hauer studied at the University of Leipzig from 1500 . He was then a priest and Latin teacher in Passau until 1513, and pastor in Plattling from 1513 to 1518 , where he was represented by a parish vicar from 1514. In 1514 he enrolled at the University of Ingolstadt . From 1518 he was pastor of the Liebfrauenkirche in Ingolstadt and finally from 1525 - in exchange with Johannes Eck - pastor of St. Moriz . From autumn 1518 he was professor for canon law at the University of Ingolstadt. In 1519 he was elected prorector of the university, and between 1523 and 1531 he was its rector six times .

Hauer stood out as a Catholic theologian of controversy against the teachings of Martin Luther . But Hauer was best known for his Latin grammar Puerilia Grammatices , which was published repeatedly from 1514 , later simply called Hauerius . Urbanus Rhegius praised them. His translation of Latin proverbs is a valuable source of German idioms and proverbs that are now extinct .
