Georg Lichtenberg (politician)
Georg Justus Wilhelm Ludwig Lichtenberg (born March 26, 1852 in Hanover ; † May 21, 1908 ibid) was a national liberal politician, state director / governor in the administration of the province of Hanover and mayor of Linden .
Life
family
Lichtenberg was the son of the Hanoverian Minister of Education and later President of the State Consistory Carl Lichtenberg . His great-grandfather was the physicist and writer Georg Christoph Lichtenberg , his brother and successor as mayor in Linden (until 1901) Karl Lichtenberg (born April 29, 1862).
Career
After attending the Lyceum from 1858 to 1870, Georg Lichtenberg studied law at the universities of Heidelberg , Leipzig and Göttingen from 1870 , where he graduated with a doctorate . In 1882 he was elected legal senator in Hanover, and on March 29, 1883, he was elected mayor of the village of Linden . During his tenure, Linden received city rights in 1885 .
In 1891 Lichtenberg stood for the election of the city director of Hanover, but lost to Heinrich Tramm . Two years later, Lichtenberg ran in the Reichstag elections in 1893 , but was also defeated in the runoff election .
At the beginning of 1895 Lichtenberg was elected to the state parliament of the province of Hanover and became the second treasurer there. His brother Karl succeeded his former mayor's office in Linden . "In connection with the resignation in Linden [Georg Lichtenberg] was granted honorary citizenship on April 2, 1895", as the first and only person from Linden.
In 1899 Lichtenberg became regional director of the Hanoverian provincial administration and remained so until his death. Furthermore, as chairman of the Lower Saxony Canal Association , he was responsible for the construction of the Mittelland Canal .
Lichtenberg died on May 21, 1908 in a car accident. His grave as a monument made of black granite can be found in the Engesohde city cemetery .
Honors
- In 1910 the Wittekindplatz in Linden was renamed Lichtenbergplatz .
- With the incorporation of Linden in 1920, Lichtenberg was made an honorary citizen of Hanover posthumously .
