Georg Ludwig Oeder , pseudonym: Sincerus Pistophilus , (born January 28, 1694 in Schopfloch , † April 24, 1760 in Feuchtwangen ) was a German Protestant theologian and philosopher .

Life

Georg Ludwig Oeder was the son of the preacher Georg Christoph (* 1652; † 1729 in Feuchtwangen ) and Anna Rosina Hacker zum Hard († 1708). The parents trained the son up to the age of 16, after which he attended the Heilsbronn monastery school. In 1712 he finally moved to the University of Jena to study theology. There he defended the dissertation de lege sub Christo adventum cessante, ad Galat in December 1714 . 3, 19. 20 . This made him a master of philosophy . In the following year he wrote de Baleamo veniam eundi non obtante, ad Num. 22, 20 and was thus habilitated . In the following years he lectured at the university.

Not much later, in 1717, Oeder returned to his homeland to help his sick father in his job. He worked as a vicar . He did not stay there long, but quickly returned to the university. He was offered an apprenticeship at the Heilsbronn high school . In 1724 he moved to Ansbach as vice-principal at the grammar school , where he also gave the midday sermons. In 1730 he became rector of the grammar school (today: grammar school Carolinum) , seven years later dean and preacher at Feuchtwangen .

In 1743, Oeder appointed the University of Erlangen a doctorate in theology. 17 years later he died at the age of 66.

family

Oeder had married Margarete Sibylle, the daughter of the Feuchtwangen dean Georg Ludwig Hamberger. The following children were born out of the marriage:

Act

Georg Ludwig Oeder was considered a versatile theologian. He was well versed in exegesis and criticism of biblical documents. This is particularly evident in his work Observationes sacrae . In this work he explained complicated biblical passages, whereby he justly renounced any mysticism.

In addition, Oeder had occupied himself with learning languages and with philosophy. He did not like the influence that philosophy has on the representation of dogmas . He also rejected Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz 's views on the origin of evil.

Oeder can be assigned to liberalism and used polemics in his works . So he led a literary dispute with Stephan Vit . He also quarreled with supporters of the papacy against which he was taking action.

Oeder's free investigation into some books of the Old Testament , which was not mentioned by Meusel / Döring in 1756, caused a sensation in its time. In this work he finds discrepancies or contradictions in the Book of Esther , Book 1 and 2 of the Chronicle , Book of Ezra , Nehemia and partially in Ezekiel . From this he concluded that these books could not have belonged to the Bible canon . He argues both subjectively and objectively. In Ezekiel, however, he only considers the last nine chapters to be spurious. He claims it was written by a Samaritan who disguised himself as a prophet to convince the Jews that their temple was wrongly built so that they would tear it down again. This citation was rejected by critics as inadequate and untenable.
