Georg "Schorsch" Metzger (born November 13, 1946 in the Fürstenfeldbruck district ) is a former German football player . For many years he played in the position of right winger until his coach Heinz Lucas ordered him to midfield in 1976, where Metzger was henceforth a convincing playmaker and director. In this role he made his final breakthrough and became the idol of the TSV 1860 Munich fan base .

Career

From the district to the big city

Metzger began playing football at TSV Gernlinden , a multi-discipline club from what is now the district of Maisach in the Upper Bavarian district of Fürstenfeldbruck . At his father's insistence, he joined FC Bayern Munich in 1965 because his father saw the club that had just been promoted to the Bundesliga as a suitable career springboard for his talented son. "For my part, I would never have gone to Bayern, I would have preferred to stay in the B-Class with Gernlinden," Metzger later revealed. In fact, he never really got warm with FC Bayern Munich. After having been active in its amateur team for three years, he received an offer in 1968 that he did not like. Because this provided for only a low basic salary and was mainly based on premium payments. But prizes require that you also (often) played and Metzger assessed his chances realistically. Therefore, he moved to ESV Ingolstadt-Ringsee in the then second-class Regionalliga Süd .

At the end of the 1969/70 season , the Eisenbahner-Sportverein had to play a decider about the league's whereabouts against SpVgg Bayreuth , who was on a relegation zone and had the same number of points and the same goal difference. At this game, which the Ingolstadt team won 5-2, officials from the traditional Munich club TSV 1860 Munich , which had just been relegated from the Bundesliga, were present. They were so impressed by Metzger's performance that they immediately made him an offer.

TSV 1860 Munich

The ten years in the white and blue jersey were Metzger's most successful time as a professional player. When he was transferred to the position of playmaker in the 1976/77 season , his talent only really came to fruition and in this role he played a decisive role in the rise of the Lions after seven years of membership in the second division. How important Metzger's wit was for his team can be seen in the reports in the kicker sports magazine . After he was fouled badly by his opponent Dragan Holcer in front of 77,573 spectators in a goalless draw in the top game against VfB Stuttgart on April 2, 1977 (32nd matchday) and had torn an ankle ligament that had to be operated on a day later the season ended prematurely for him. For the last six point games, the “sixties” had to do without their ingenious playmaker, which made Honorary President Adalbert Wetzel look gloomy into the future: “The loss of Metzger for the rest of the season is much more serious than the point lost this time. That can, that will probably cost us the promotion. "

Although the "Sixties" the standings forfeited soon one of VfB Stuttgart, who no longer blazes, but managed without Metzger on 22 April 1977 (35th matchday) an intoxicating 3: 1 victory in the stadium Bieberer mountain and thus kept the Offenbacher Kickers at a distance. At the end of the season, the "lions" took second place, which they qualified for the relegation games against the second in the group north , Arminia Bielefeld . Incidentally, the butcher, who had recovered unexpectedly early, was able to take part in these games, which cannot be surpassed in terms of drama. Although he did not succeed much in the first game - like his entire team at all - and TSV 1860 Munich clearly got under the wheels with 0: 4 at the Bielefelder Alm , fate turned a week later. In the Munich Olympic Stadium the Lions overran the “Arminen” with 4: 0 and thus forced a third game in Frankfurt , which was no longer considered possible , which the “Sixties” won 2-0. Metzger played a decisive role in these successes. He converted a penalty kick in Munich to make it 4-0, and in the Waldstadion in Frankfurt he scored the decisive goal to make it 2-0. From 1974 to 1979 Metzger played 128 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and scored 39 goals for the "Löwen".

From the big city to the district

In the 1977/78 and 1979/80 seasons , Metzger did what he couldn't at Bayern Munich: he played in the Bundesliga . He made his debut on August 6, 1977 (1st matchday) in a goalless draw in the home game against FC Schalke 04 ; he scored his first of a total of three goals in 29 league games on January 28, 1978 (23rd matchday) in a 4-0 win at home against MSV Duisburg with the goal of 3-0 from a penalty kick in the 58th minute. At the age of 33 he returned to his homeland and let his playing career end in 1981 at SC Fürstenfeldbruck after a season.

Georg Metzger's autograph

In the second division home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on August 24, 1974 Metzger was badly hit by his opponent Koppenhöfer several times without him having been warned. Finally, the angry butcher let himself be carried away to a foul of revenge, which earned him a warning. When he was fouled again by Koppenhöfer, he saw the yellow card sticking out of the referee's breast pocket so temptingly that he couldn't help but use it himself and hold it under his opponent's nose. Of course, Metzger knew what the consequences would be and left the field without saying a word, without waiting for the red card the referee gave him on the way.
