Georg Paul Koellner

Georg Paul Köllner (born June 14, 1902 in Mainz , † July 20, 1971 ) was a German church musician and university professor .

Career

Like his predecessors in the office of Mainz cathedral music director, Georg Viktor Weber and August Rudolf Vogt, Köllner attended the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in Mainz . As an alumnus of the Mainz seminary , he was ordained in Mainz by Bishop Ludwig Maria Hugo Kaplan in Froschhausen , Klein -zimmer , Worms-Horchheim and Bodenheim . He began his church music career with his predecessor Vogt. Later he was a student in Regensburg with Prof. Carl Thiel and Cathedral Kapellmeister Theobald Schrems and a member of the Regensburger Domspatzen . In 1936 he was appointed secretary of the episcopal chancellery. At the same time, Köllner was parish organist at the High Cathedral in Mainz until 1940 . From 1938 he worked as a notary at the episcopal office . From 1936 to 1948 he was active in youth work as President of the Marian Congregation . In 1940 he took over the management of the Mainz Cathedral Choir . From 1940 to 1968 he worked as cathedral music director and successor to August Rudolf Vogt (cathedral music director from 1904 to 1940). From 1940 Köllner also had a teaching position for singing and church music at the Mainz seminary and worked as an organ builder and bell inspector.

Between 1947 and 1955 Georg Paul Köllner was a prosynodal judge and official councilor. 1951 at Arnold Schmitz Doctor of Philosophy PhD ; Title of the dissertation: The Accentus Moguntinus . He then received a teaching position and later an honorary professorship at the Catholic theological faculty of Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In 1953 it was accepted into the Mainz cathedral chapter as a cathedral praise date . In 1956 he finally became a member of the Liturgical Council of the Diocese of Mainz. In 1960 Köllner was appointed to the clergy .

From 1951 to 1963 he headed the German choir association Pueri Cantores , an association of Catholic children, boys, girls and youth choirs from all over the world.

Honors

Georg Paul Köllner was honored with the papal honorary title of Papal Secret Chamberlain ( Monsignor ) in 1966 for his services . He received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Mainz Gutenberg plaque.
