The first mention of Froschhausen is in a document dated February 22, 1287. This document is a comparison between the abbot Godfried of the Benedictine abbey in Seligenstadt and the Auheimer Mark about wood deliveries.

Froschhausen and other places around Seligenstadt probably owe their foundation to the clearing activities of the Benedictine abbey in Seligenstadt . This foundation was probably in the late 9th or early 10th century.

In the Middle Ages , the Seligenstadt Abbey owned a lot of land in Froschhausen. The place belonged to the Markgenossenschaft Auheimer Mark , the surrounding forests belonged to the Wildbann Dreieich . In the northeast of the district was the Dreckshausen desert , in the southeast opposite the A3 federal motorway was the Spechtsloch farm . The place Froschhausen politically belonged to the Electorate of Mainz .

In 1786 Froschhausen received its share of the Markwald after the Auheimer Mark was divided . After the secularization of the Electorate of Mainz in 1803 as part of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , to which Froschhausen belonged for centuries, the district bailiwick of Seligenstadt with Froschhausen came to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt .

In World War II Froschhausen had to mourn many casualties. Shortly before the American troops marched in, Froschhausen was the target of an air raid on Palm Sunday 1945 , which led to damage and destruction and also to death. In the same year, the long-time mayor of the community, Valentin Holler (1913-1945), was deposed, although he - with a Christian character and not a National Socialist - had successfully led the community since the German Empire .

After the Second World War, Froschhausen took off from an agricultural street village to a flourishing community. This upswing is mainly associated with the names of the mayors Otto Adam Schmitt ( CDU , 1945–1961) and Hans Gerstner ( CDU , 1961–1976).

In 1987 the community celebrated the first documentary mention 700 years ago with a festival with the participation of the entire local associations and the population, in 2012 a 725th anniversary celebration was held from June 1st to 3rd.

Territorial reform

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Froschhausen was incorporated into the city of Seligenstadt by law on January 1, 1977, although the politicians at the time believed that the municipality would have been politically and financially in a position to remain independent. A remnant of independence remained insofar as Froschhausen still has its own local court .

From the beginning there are only sporadic records of the population development.

In 2003, the population figures were published in the Offenbach-Post and have been available on the website of the city of Seligenstadt since 2009.

These figures show a continuity since 2003. Around 4,000 people live in Froschhausen. Of these, 94% have registered their first and 6% their second residence since 2009.

The largest access with 31 people came at the end of 2014 with the settlement of the new building area Backesfeld in the south-eastern area of Froschhausen. The largest departure with 33 people took place in the summer of 2006.

About the growth from the new development area “Im Erlig” in the north of Froschhausen at the end of the 1990s, from which around 35 new houses (of 41 possible building plots according to the development plan) have been built, and the new development area “Am Reitpfad” in the industrialized west of Froschhausen since 2000, in which 14 properties are designated for residential purposes, there are no population development figures.

For the first time at the end of 2015, over 4,000 people have lived in Froschhausen since the last time in the early 2000s. With their main residence, there were only over 4,000 people again in mid-2019.

religion

Catholic Church of St. Margareta

Froschhausen used to be almost entirely Catholic , it was only through the integration of the expellees after the Second World War and the dissolution of the previous structures that a mixture took place.

There is a Catholic parish in Froschhausen: St. Margareta . Their community center is on Anne-Frank-Strasse and is called Maximilian-Kolbe-Haus. The Catholic public library and many youth groups of the KjG are represented in this house . Almost all events of the parish take place there, including the annual parish festival in summer.

Froschhausen was part of the Benedictine Abbey of Seligenstadt. The chain stores were obliged to go to the church service in Seligenstadt. Until 1834 the dead were buried in the cemetery in Seligenstadt.

In 1731 the first hall church with a five-eighth end was built in modest dimensions in Froschhausen and consecrated to Saint Margaret. This stood on the place of today's town hall. The old church became too small around 1850 and “only met its purpose very poorly”. There was also no sacristy . After the construction of the new church, the building was used as a school and administrative building. The tower of the old church still adorns Froschhausen's town hall today, it was placed on top of the newly built town hall after the church was demolished in 1939. Despite the monument protection, the church could not be preserved because it stood so strongly in the course of the road that the road could only be used in one lane.

The new church was built from 1869 to 1871. It was inaugurated by the Bishop of Mainz, Baron Emanuel von Ketteler .

On April 21, 1914, Bishop Kirstein appointed the parish of Froschhausen to an independent parish curate . Previously, the chaplains from Seligenstadt were responsible for the services.

The Protestant Christians belong on the one hand to the Protestant parish of Seligenstadt and Mainhausen, which has a parish hall in Froschhausen for church services and events. On the other hand, there is a Protestant free church in Froschhausen with the Church of the Nazarene .

The solidarity of the religious communities in Froschhausen became clear at the 725th anniversary during an ecumenical service on the fairground. Several hundred visitors were counted at this tented service of the three congregations.

The belief is also reflected in club activities in Froschhausen. So organize local associations a special service, the local fire department organized annually their Florianstag with a visit of worship and on Carnival Sunday all go frog houses Prince couples (currently children royal couple, Prince couple and senior royals) with his followers in the church. For the latter, all church visitors are foolishly costumed and carnival songs are played in the church.

politics

Former mayor and local council

The determining force in Froschhausen has been the CDU since the Second World War . Both mayors, who headed Froschhausen from 1945 until the end of independence on December 31, 1976 (Otto Adam Schmitt and Hans Gerstner), were appointed by the CDU. At present, 8 city councilors and 1 city council of the CDU, 2 city councilors of the SPD and 1 city councilor of the Free Voters represent the interests of the frog houses in the city council assembly in Seligenstadt.

badges and flags

coat of arms

Blazon : "In a red shield a golden frog , each side with a silver-leafed reed stem with black cobs."

The coat of arms of the community Froschhausen was approved on November 15, 1955 by the Hessian Minister of the Interior . It was designed by the heraldist Georg Massoth.

The frog is the talking element for the place name.

flag

The flag was approved by the Hessian Minister of the Interior on September 6, 1956, and is described as follows: "On a wide, yellow central track, separated from two narrower red tracks, with the town's coat of arms in the middle."

Carnival coat of arms

The Froschhäuser Carnival Committee has a slightly different coat of arms on its fool's caps :

Split shield. On the right in the blue field a half six-spoke silver wheel ( Mainz wheel ), on the left in the blue field a half red frog.

The coat of arms symbolizes the affiliation to the Middle Rhine Carnival through the Mainz wheel, but is arranged exactly mirror-inverted to the official Seligenstadt city coat of arms in order to stand out from it.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Old Town Hall

Due to the independence of Froschhausen until 1977, the old town hall still exists from this time. This was designed by the architect Prof. Erich Mindner from the TH Darmstadt and is built as a half-timbered house , contrary to all buildings designed according to the Nazi style during this period . As a special feature, the tower of the church was used as a town hall tower. The old chapel stood very far in the street so that it could only be used in one lane and therefore had to give way. The town hall itself was inaugurated on June 16, 1939. At the beginning, the local administration was based there. In the meantime, the rooms are used for the home history working group and for the Junge Union Froschhausen .

The community center was built before the incorporation and serves as an event location for all local associations.

The Froschhäuser waterworks is located in the Klein-Krotzenburger Wald near the Weiskirchen motorway service station. This pumps around 150 m³ / h into the supply areas.

There is also a golf course at the entrance to Seligenstadt.

Cultural monuments

During the Second World War, but also in the post-war period in the so-called “economic boom” , the half-timbered houses in Froschhausen were not completely destroyed, so that they are now among the cultural monuments. The cultural monuments still preserved currently include eight half-timbered houses, the cemetery cross, the Catholic parish church and the old town hall.

societies

The umbrella organization of the Froschhäuser Club Life is the Vereinring, founded in 1979, which, under the leadership of Frank Lortz, represents the interests of currently 28 Froschhaus clubs and associations.

Affiliated to the Froschhausen Association is the Home History working group, which is dedicated to local history and regularly holds exhibitions on various topics of local history in its rooms in the former Froschhausen Town Hall. In addition to these exhibitions, the working group also offers themed evenings such as B. restaurants in Froschhausen or contemporary witness reports from the Second World War.

In addition to the associations affiliated with the association ring, there are other associations in the Seligenstadt district. The diversity of the frog houses club landscape is evident from a. due to the comparatively high number of communities that consist of a few members or can be assigned to special areas of interest that do not affect the whole place or only part of the population. This includes the hunting association, the IG Backesfeld 2017 eV or the 10/20 Mofa Club eV

There are also many independent groups in Froschhausen that have not been founded as an association. This includes many carnival groups or the male singing formation "Kreiselfrösche", which has existed since 2015.

In the 1980s there were a large number of clubhouse buildings in Froschhausen. This includes the club houses of Harmonie, the gymnastics and sports community, the Liederfreund and poultry breeding club, the fishing club, the tennis club and the fruit and horticultural club. Recently the homes of the IG Hund und Mensch, the tractor friends and the golf club have been added. The KITOKI Indian Association does not have a clubhouse, but has its own facility where it holds its annual events. Occasionally, clubs use existing venues. This includes the sport shooters, the Junge Union, the club ring and the fire brigade club.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that broke out around the world at the beginning of 2020, local club life also had to be completely shut down. All events and general meetings of the local associations were therefore canceled from March 2020 until the summer.

Local history group

As a sub-grouping of the Vereinsring Froschhausen there is a working group that deals with the topic of local history. This working group reports every autumn on historical topics from and about Froschhausen. The exhibitions take place in Froschhausen's old town hall.

So far there have been the following exhibitions:

  • 2003: Presentation of the working group (in the foyer of the community center Froschhausen)
  • 2004: Froschhausen in old views and club chronicles (history of all local clubs with picture and text certificates)
  • 2005: The vintages of the Froschhäuser Citizens (pictures of all vintages over 100 years)
  • 2006: The leather goods industry in Froschhausen through the ages (exhibition on the development of leather goods and leather companies in Froschhausen)
  • 2007: Froschhausen during and immediately after the Second World War (picture chronicle of all fallen and expellees)
  • 2008: Froghouse weddings until 1960
  • 2009: 30th anniversary of the club ring and 70th anniversary of Froschhäuser Rathaus
  • 2010: Past and present of the parishes in Froschhausen
  • 2011: Special exhibitions with contemporary witnesses for the festival "725 years Froschhausen"
  • 2012: Review of the festival "700 Years of Froschhausen" and "Old and Contemporary Views"
  • 2013: School in Froschhausen (on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Alfred Delp School)

The exhibition in 2007 on the effects of the Second World War met with a great response. Around 800 visitors were counted in the exhibition week in the old town hall. The three evening events with contemporary witnesses were held with more than 300 visitors.

Since 2014 there has been a transition from an elaborate exhibition in the old town hall to a concept with eyewitness evenings. Every year, alternating evenings take place here at the two Froschhäuser Choral Societies, where there is a presentation on a special topic, in which visitors can participate and exchange ideas. Every event that has already passed met with a great response, sometimes with over 100 visitors.

So far there have been the following eyewitness events:

  • 2014: Froschhausen in World War II
  • 2015: Restaurants in Froschhausen
  • 2016: big anniversary celebrations frog houses associations
  • 2017: Review of the festival "700 years of Froschhausen"
  • 2018: Wanted, found - what moves people to move to Froschhausen

In 2015, in the course of the contemporary witness event, a project choir founded especially for this day was presented, which played songs from the old days.

Furthermore, the AK Heimatgeschichte conducts a historical cemetery tour every May. The deceased frog houses are remembered here. The first event took place in 2011 and has continued to this day.

The previous historical cemetery walks were dedicated to the following people:

  • May 12, 2015: Friedel Schardt, Wilhelm Salg, Heinz Sticksel, Franz J. Schmitt, August Ott
  • May 24, 2016: Willy Löw, Nikolaus Lommel, Rudi Walter, Alois Wolf
  • 0May 9, 2017: Hans Rückert, Pastor Josef Gremm, Dr. Ernst Braun, Ferdinand Grimm
  • May 15, 2018: Hermann Sticksel, Josef Sticksel, Lydia Köhler, Sebastian Salg
  • 0May 7, 2019: Hermann Sticksel, Hans Gerstner, Josef Busser, August Rücker, Franz Klein

The end of the AK Heimatgeschichte was indicated for 2019. Due to a lack of offspring and support, work should be stopped in spring after the historic cemetery walk.

Customs / Carnival

Fastnacht has been celebrated in Froschhausen for many years. In charge of this is the choral society Harmonie Froschhausen 1892 eV , which has been providing the Froschhausen prince couple at irregular intervals since 1952 and annually since 1969. In the early years the Harmonie alternated again and again with the other Gesangverein Liederfreund 1858 Froschhausen eV, with the Liederfreund enthroned the very first prince couple in 1951 with Ewald Korb and Irma Ott. The prince couple from 1991 also ruled in the following year 1992, as the carnival was canceled due to the Second Gulf War (1990/91). The prince couple is supported by the foolish committee of around 50 cap brothers and sisters.

In 1951, several carnival groups were founded, which together organized a carnival parade in Froschhausen for many years. This is no longer running. Nevertheless, the frog houses run carnival groups at Rosenmontagszug with in Seligenstadt.

Since 2002, the song friend has chosen the first frog house child prince couple. He is supported by an annually changing group of masks from their own ranks, which give the motto of the annual motif car.

In 2018, the first senior prince couple was crowned spontaneously in the Zum Lamm restaurant in Froschhausen. This consists of old, well-earned fast nights from the place and only takes part in a few official dates. The other two prince couples have to go through up to 25 appointments per campaign. However, all three can be seen together in the annual Mardi Gras service on the Sunday before Rose Monday. In this service, costuming is expressly desired and the pastor of the community gives his sermon in rhyme.

With the TuS 1880 eV Froschhausen sports club , a strong trio was formed in Froschhausen at the end of the 2010s, which has since taken over the entire organization of the Froschhaus carnival dates. Since 2020, these three large local associations have been issuing a joint flyer with all Carnival dates in Froschhausen.

Oddities

Due to the flourishing club life in Froschhausen, several anniversary parties are celebrated every year. In addition to the traditional pageants, which lead through the entire town on the main road (Landesstraße L 2310), but are increasingly fading, there are also so-called "Froschhaus Frühschoppen". These usually take place on Sunday mornings from 11:00 a.m. to around 2:00 p.m. Visitors to the festivals can get all drinks free of charge from the counters or have the wait staff bring them to them. This free beer morning pint is financed by donations from the Froschhäuser associations, companies in the area or private individuals. These donations (€ 150 each) have the fictitious "currency" of a hectolitre (beer). In the course of this morning pint, 50 to 100 donations are collected, depending on the association. The end of the free beer heralds the last appeal for donations.

Townscape

The townscape in the old town center is characterized by many neat half-timbered houses. The basis was the former character of Froschhausen as a street village . In the center of the village is the former town hall of the community. This was built in 1939 and the old Froschhausen church that had previously stood on this site was demolished. The church tower was placed on top of the new town hall in an architectural and structural masterpiece. Today the town hall houses the branch office of the city administration, rooms of the club ring and rooms of the Junge Union Froschhausen.

Over the past few decades, Froschhausen has expanded to include new building areas that have made a significant contribution to the appearance of the town. For example, Froschhausen in the west was expanded to include the new building area around the Reitpfad in a wide-ranging industrial area with an adjacent residential area. In the north there is the residential area Im Erlig and south / east the new development area Backesfeld. A grocery store for Froschhausen was created here and space was created for a multi-purpose hall with an adjoining new kindergarten.

Nature reserves

Four nature reserves border Froschhausen , the Obermannslache in the eastern part of the Froschhäuser district, the Langhorst of Hainburg and Seligenstadt between Froschhausen and the Hainburg district of Hainstadt and the Kortenbach and Schwarzbruch von Seligenstadt, both located between Seligenstadt and Froschhausen.

Economy and Infrastructure

Economic structure

There are three industrial areas in Froschhausen. These are located along the streets Stehnweg, Am Reitpfad and Am Sandborn.

Up until the regional reform in 1977, these industrial areas contributed to the financial stability of the district in addition to the leather goods industry in Froschhausen.

The largest resident companies in Froschhausen are the forwarding company Schmitt (since 1906 with 2 locations) and the company HEMA (since 1977 with 2 locations). There are also several smaller craft firms, locksmiths and car workshops. In the 2010s, smaller companies were founded or settled in Froschhausen again.

Infrastructure

Transport links

Froschhausen is connected in a westerly direction ( Offenbach am Main ) via the state road L 2310 to the federal road B 45 and thus also to the federal highway 3 via the Hanau junction .

The state road L 2310 runs through Froschhausen and further towards the core town of Seligenstadt in the southeast. Before Seligenstadt is the colloquial "Scheppkreisel", which is not in the water, but at an angle (Hessian: schepp) to the road. From this roundabout , the L 2310 leads around Seligenstadt to the Mainhausen junction of the A 45 . The other roundabout junction leads over Frankfurter Straße into downtown Seligenstadt.

Waters

Two streams arise in the north and south-east of Froschhausen . The Werniggraben , which flows through the Kortenbach nature reserve to the L 2310 state road, has its source at about 196 km of the A3 motorway . In the Schwarzbruch nature reserve near Seligenstadt, it flows north along the Obermannslache to the Langhorst after Hainburg. At the end of the Langhorst the Weihersbach flows into the Werniggraben.

The Weihersbach rises in two sources. On the one hand at the beginning of the Langhorst and in a private garden plot in the Im Erlig building area in Froschhausen. On the frog house side, the Weihersbach is also called Weigertsbach . The frog houses also call the source of the Weihersbach Brunkel . According to a local legend, the frog houses children come from there.

sewage

Froschhausen has its own pumping station, which serves as a preliminary stage for the sewage treatment plant on the outskirts of Seligenstadt. This station was completely renovated at the end of the 1970s. After that it was partly shut down until cracks in the concrete parts were discovered in a report in 2005. Therefore, the facility was renovated and modernized in 2008.

Internet

In 2019, Froschhausen was provided with a nationwide connection via newly laid fiber optic lines by Deutsche Glasfaser, according to a public survey . Before that, the connection via copper lines was only between 2,000 and 6,000 kB / s.

post Office

The old Froschhäuser post office was on Seligenstädter Straße not far from the Wiesenweg junction and was moved in the 1970s with the development of the new residential area in Freiherr-vom-Stein-Ring, right next to the new fire department building. In the 1990s, this post office was closed as part of the postal reform and the old state-owned Deutsche Bundespost was privatized. First, a post office was set up in what was then HL-Markt nearby, which later moved to a long-established household goods store in Jügesheimer Weg. Due to the closure of business, this location was also closed in 2020.

Shops

The retail trade ( "corner shops" ) flourished in Froschhausen up to the 20th century . Up until the 1990s there were two butchers, two bakeries and two grocery stores (originally Edeka across from the church and an HL market in Freiherr-vom-Stein-Ring). Since the 1990s, all of these businesses have been gradually abandoned. An investor has taken over the traditional Bußer bakery in the town center. One of the two butcher shops will continue to be operated by a caterer .

The two food markets were discontinued. In the course of the reallocation phase, a new Netto market was created in the Backesfeld development area , which has been open since July 17, 2012.

Location structure

Froschhausen as a street village is divided into a northern and a southern part by the L 2310 state road.

In the northern part of Froschhausen there has been little growth since it was founded. This part is characterized by the Schulstraße running parallel to the L 2310. In the north-west, Froschhausen was expanded to include the Im Erlig building area around the turn of the millennium.

The southern part, on the other hand, is constantly developing. In the 1970s, a new residential area was developed around Freiherr-vom-Stein-Ring. There were previously many swamp areas here , which have now been largely drained. The old field names like Schnackenacker also came from this time . The industrial area Am Sandborn also developed in the 80s . At the beginning of the 2010s the new building area Backesfeld was built .

The two districts north and south of the L 2310 have been designated as a traffic-calmed traffic zone as a 30-speed zone since the beginning of the 2000s . In contrast, in the Reitpfad / Sandborn and Stehnweg industrial areas, the generally permitted maximum speed within a built -up area is 50 km / h.

library

The Catholic public library St. Margareta Froschhausen has existed since 1902. After the break due to the war, the library was revived through the commitment of Pastor Josef Gremm . In cooperation with the long-time director Lydia Köhler, a considerable inventory was put together. There are over 3400 books and more than 1000 audiovisual media available on the first floor of the Maximilian Kolbe House (as of May 2017). The library is looked after by a volunteer team. Occasional events are also planned and carried out in cooperation with the library department of the Mainz diocese .

education

kindergarten

In Froschhausen, a Catholic kindergarten is operated in the Backesfeld development area. This replaces the old building on Schulstrasse. On September 1, 2019, the new kindergarten was inaugurated as part of a festive service on the fairground (next to the new kindergarten area). The new kindergarten has one more toddler and two children's groups than the old building. The construction was estimated at € 3.26 million.

A Kneipp kindergarten will open on the site of the old kindergarten in summer 2019.

Education

Froschhausen has a primary school, the Alfred Delp School. This was opened in 1963 as the then elementary school with 9 years and celebrated its 50th anniversary with a big party in 2013. For this occasion, the concrete base on the Schulstrasse side was repainted, decorated with frogs and the anniversary was affixed to it. The name was given in 1969 after the Jesuit father Alfred Delp, who was executed by the National Socialists in 1945 . A short time later it was gradually reduced to a primary school. In 2002, a new childcare building was built to accommodate 50 children. In 2005 and 2006, renovation measures were carried out on the sports hall, the school building, the outdoor area and the school yard.

On January 20, 2000, a support association for the Alfed Delp School was founded.

The secondary public schools are in Seligenstadt ( Einhardgymnasium and Merianschule / Haupt- und Realschule) and Hainburg-Klein-Krotzenburg (Kreuzburgschule / Haupt- und Realschule).

The former school buildings are (chronologically) the current drugstore opposite the Catholic parish church, as well as the now converted multi-family house on Seligenstädter Straße between Wiesenweg and Anne-Frank-Straße.

Personalities

Honorary citizen

The formerly independent community of Froschhausen made three fellow citizens honorary citizens in the years before its incorporation in 1977 :
