The Hellenbach is a more than eleven kilometers long, southern and orographically left tributary of the Main in the Offenbach and Main-Kinzig districts in Hesse . It is the last remnant of the old Main river south of Hanau - Klein-Auheim . Originally the source of the Hellenbach was west of Hainburg , but in 2009 the Werniggraben, which ran a little further south, was completely diverted into the Hellenbach. This made the Werniggraben the new upper reaches of the Hellenbach.

geography

Werniggraben

The Werniggraben rises south of Froschhausen on the federal highway 3 . It flows around the place through the nature reserves Kortenbach near Froschhausen and Obermannslache near Froschhausen and takes on the Weihersbach south of Hainstadt in the nature reserve Langhorst von Hainburg and Seligenstadt . In this area, the Werniggraben was called "Stinkbach" by the locals. From the Hainstädter tennis facilities, the Werniggraben used to flow underground through the town and flow into the Main opposite the Staudinger power plant . Since the measures in 2009, this old course has been shut down and the creek bed dug above ground further north to the source of the Hellenbach creek, which hardly has any water.

Hellenbach

From its former source (location) , the Hellenbach, now reinforced by the water of the Werniggraben, flows through the nature reserve Im Woog von Hainstadt . Then it reaches the Urmain loop coming from the Schifflache in the nature reserve Untere Fasanerie von Klein-Auheim . The Hellenbach then runs past the Alte Fasanerie wildlife park and Tistrasee , crosses under the federal highway 43a and flows through an alluvial forest area . He then crosses over a length of 1.2 km that the conservation area town of Hanau belonging Hellental and reaches Hanau-Steinheim , where a portion of its water into a Kneipp facility is managed. From there, the Hellenbach forms the border with Klein-Auheim and flows into the Altarm Steinheimer Altmain .

Both sub-units belong to the natural spatial main unit of the Lower Main Level and thus to the main unit group Rhein-Main-Tiefland . Administratively, the upper course and the middle area belong to the Offenbach district and the lower course to the Main-Kinzig district .
