from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Praetorius (born October 20, 1878 in Berlin , † November 7, 1944 in Bad Harzburg ) was a German physician and urologist . As chief physician of the first urological department in Germany in today KRH Klinikum Siloah in Hannover he acquired through his pioneering professional activities the reputation as Nestor of the North German urology.

Life

Georg Praetorius was born as the son of the orientalist and Semitic philologist and professor Franz Praetorius (1847-1927).

After graduating from high school in 1897, he first studied German from 1897 to 1899 in Halle (Saale) at what is now the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg and in Munich at the Ludwig Maximilians University .

Subsequently, Praetorius switched to human medicine and from 1899 studied again in Halle and in Rostock at the university there . After he had passed his state examination in 1903 , he wrote his inaugural dissertation “About muscle gums in the syphilis stage ” in Rostock in 1905 .

Praetorius later passed his examination as a specialist in dermatology in order to then continue his training as a urologist on his own. He worked temporarily as a ship's doctor , worked as a dermatologist in Berlin and with Erich Wossidlo .

In 1906 he was one of the co-founders of the German-Austrian Society for Urology .

In 1910 Georg Praetorius started working at what was then the Siloah Clinic in Linden , where he founded the first purely urological department in a municipal hospital in 1913.

At the beginning of the Weimar Republic , Hans Bunnenberg was a student of Praetorius from 1920 to 1923, similar to Bernhard Sökeland .

Numerous scientific studies and publications and above all his appearance at various specialist congresses made Praetorius known beyond the borders of the country. At the 93rd meeting of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors from September 16-20, 1934 in Hanover, for example, Georg Praetorius gave the introductory lecture for the Urology Section.

Many of Praetoris' patients traveled from far away to be examined and treated by him.

In the middle of the Second World War , Georg Praetorius resigned after 33 years of service at the Siloah Hospital and in the same year he set up a private practice with beds in Herzberg near Osterode am Harz . But in the following year, 1944, his practice was destroyed by a bomb attack. Also in 1944, Praetorius died on November 7th in Bad Harzburg.

The urology department headed by Praetorius moved - 100 years after its founding - in May 2013 from the listed buildings of today's KRH Clinic Siloah to a modern new building of the hospital.

Praetoriusweg

The Praetoriusweg , which was laid out in the Groß-Buchholz district of Hanover in 1959 , has since given its name to the urologist who has worked at the Siloah Hospital for decades.
