Georg Friedrich von Bradke (born May 16, jul. / 27 May  1796 greg. In Arensburg , † April 3 jul. / 15. April  1862 greg. In Tartu ) was a Baltic German officer, curator of the Imperial University of Dorpat and promoter of the Russian school system.

Life

Georg von Bradke was the son of the German-Baltic officer in the Russian service and later provincial governor Friedrich Wilhelm von Bradke (1752–1819) and his wife Christine, nee. from Haack. Following his father's example, he joined the Russian army at an early age. His training in the cadet class of the St. Petersburg Mountain Corps from 1806 to 1810 was followed by general staff training and in 1815 he was promoted to officer. Bradke became the chief quartermaster of the military settlements in 1823 and from 1827 to 1830 was a lieutenant colonel in command of the settlements in the Kherson Governorate . Promoted to colonel in 1830 , it was used in the Polish November uprising in 1831 .

In 1832 Georg von Bradke moved to the civil administration of the Russian Empire as a real councilor . He was employed in the school administration and initially worked as a curator in Kiev until 1838 . He then rose rapidly, in 1839 he became a member of the Council of the Domain Ministry as a director, in 1841 a secret council and in 1844 a senator (member of the state council ). Both Tsar Nicholas I and his successor Alexander II valued him for special tasks.

With the death of Gustav Craffström , he became his successor in 1854 as curator of the University of Dorpat . The change of power in Russia brought about with the death of Tsar Nicholas I enabled him, as a curator, to re-authorize the forbidden student associations . In the spring of 1855 he recognized the Comment as the constitution of the student body and the ban on wearing colors was lifted. Bradke also promoted the general school system of the Baltic provinces . After his death in 1862, his successor Alexander Graf Keyserling continued the liberalization of the University of Dorpat as curator.

family

Georg von Bradke married Rosette von Luce's first marriage in 1825; from this marriage his son, the privy councilor Emanuel von Bradke (1832-1918) emerged. The linguist Peter von Bradke was his son from his second marriage in 1852 to Luise Lucie von Saß (1827–1861).
