Gustav Craffström
Gustav von Craffström , also Gustav Borisovič Craffström , Kraffström and Graffström , Russian Евстафий Борисович Крафстрем , Yevstafi Borissowitsch Krafstrem (born August 16, 1784 ; † September 7, 1854 in Dorpat ) was first in the administration of the Russian Imperial and Russian officer and then joined the administration of the Russian Imperial Army in the Baltic Governments over.
Life
With regard to his family origins, the German-language sources are speculative and point to belonging to the lower Swedish-Livonian nobility. What is certain is that in 1800 he decided to pursue a career in the military and joined the Imperial Russian Preobrazhensk body guard regiment as a soldier. In 1805 he was promoted to ensign , in 1810 to lieutenant and in 1812 to staff captain . In the coalition wars he took part in the entire campaign of 1813/14 with all battles as far as Paris . On September 23, 1813 he was promoted to captain (captain). He returned to Russia by ship via Cherbourg . On January 1, 1816 he was given the rank of colonel and in 1822 was commander of the Wiborg Infantry Regiment. In 1824 he was promoted to major general . As such, he was commander of the Moscow Guards Regiment from 1826 to 1833 . He led his regiment in the Russo-Turkish War (1828-1829) and in the suppression of the Polish November Uprising . In 1833 Craffström became lieutenant general and then moved from military service to civil administration.
From 1836 until his death in 1854 he was the curator and successor to Carl Magnus von der Pahlen of the Dorpater teaching district and was a member of the high school administration in Saint Petersburg . In particular, the teachers at the University of Dorpat perceived him as a meticulous bureaucrat who barely granted any academic freedom. He pushed through the Russification of the grammar schools and the university as requested by Tsar Nicholas I , but maintained good connections with the ministers for public education Count Sergei Semjonowitsch Uvarow and Prince Širinskij, who were noted as helpful from the teachers' point of view. He was simply unpopular with students; the student associations in Dorpat could only be reorganized according to the times after his death. His successor as curator was Georg von Bradke , who loosened the reins a little after the death of Tsar Nikolaus in 1855.
