George F. Cahill Jr.
George Francis Cahill, Jr. (born July 7, 1927 in New York City , † July 30, 2012 in Peterborough , New Hampshire ) was an American physician who researched in particular the glucose and lipid metabolism in humans.
Life
Cahill studied from 1944 at Yale University . He interrupted his training for a two-year military service and finished his studies in 1949 with a bachelor's degree. He completed his medical degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) at Columbia University in 1953. He then worked as an assistant doctor at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston . From 1955 to 1957 he conducted research in Albert Baird Hastings ' laboratory before moving to the Joslin Diabetes Center in 1958 after a further clinical year . After Albert Renold returned to Europe, Cahill was Scientific Director of the facility from 1962 to 1978. From 1962 to 1990 he worked at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute , from 1972 as Scientific Advisory Board, from 1978 as Scientific Director and later until 1989 as Deputy Director of the facility. In 1970 Cahill became a professor at Harvard University , where he taught until his retirement in 1990. As a professor of biology, he led a biology course at Dartmouth College for seven years from 1989 .
Cahill was married to Sarah ("Sally") duPont († 2010) from 1949, the couple had four daughters and two sons.
Act
Cahill's research areas included human glucose metabolism, the role of insulin , diabetes mellitus , the influence of starvation and fasting on metabolic pathways and ketosis .
He was the author and co-author of around 200 articles in scientific journals and the author of book chapters.
In 1982 and 1985, Cahill testified in the two trials against Claus von Bülow , who was charged with the attempted murder of his wife Sunny von Bülow . In both trials, Cahill attested that the woman's condition could only be traced back to an administration of insulin.
