George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood

George Henry Hubert Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood KBE (born February 7, 1923 in Harewood House ; † July 11, 2011 ibid) was a British nobleman and the eldest son of Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood (1882-1947) , and Mary Victoria , the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary . He was therefore a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. Most recently, he was 46th in line to the throne .

He directed the Royal Opera House , the English National Opera , the Edinburgh International Festival and for years the Leeds United Football Club .

Life

Lascelles was born on February 7, 1923 in Harewood House , Yorkshire , the ancestral home of the Earls of Harewood . At the coronation of his uncle George VI. in May 1937 he was an honorary page. He attended Eton College and King's College , Cambridge .

After completing his training, he became an officer in the Grenadier Guards . In World War II he reached the rank of captain ; He fought in Italy and was captured by the Germans in 1944, who held him as a prominent prisoner in Colditz Castle.

After the war he served as an adjutant to his uncle Alexander Cambridge, 1st Earl of Athlone , who was Governor General of Canada at the time . At the same time, he was State Councilor until 1956 , an office that apart from himself only princes and princesses or spouses of monarchs held. In 1947, after the death of his father, Lascelles inherited the title of Earl of Harewood .

In the following years the Earl of Harewood made a career in the field of opera . In 1950 he founded the specialist journal Opera , but in 1953 he handed over the editorial office to Harold Rosenthal . From 1961 to 1965 he directed the Edinburgh International Festival . He was twice director of the Royal Opera House , Covent Garden, and for more than ten years director of the second major London opera house, the English National Opera . From 1985 to 1987 he was a member of the BBC Board of Governors . At the same time he was President of the British Board of Film Classification until 1996 .

In addition to an autobiography, Lascelles has written two opera guides based on the work of the New York music critic Gustav Kobbé , who died in 1918 .

His second great passion was soccer . From 1963 to 1972 he was President of the English Football Association , from 1983 he was President of Leeds United . He was also temporarily Chancellor of the University of York .

From 1949 to 1967 he was married to the famous Austrian opera singer Marion Stein ; the divorce was considered a scandal at the time. There are three children from the marriage:

In 1967 Lascelles married the Australian violinist Patricia Tuckwell , sister of the famous horn player Barry Tuckwell . The son Mark Hubert Lascelles , born in 1964 (July 5), comes from this relationship. However, the latter is neither in the line of succession, nor can he inherit the dignity of an earl because he was born out of wedlock ; even the subsequent marriage of his parents does not change this.

The 2005 Sunday Times Rich List, which lists the 1000 richest people or families in the UK , ranks the Lascelles family 270th with a fortune of £ 148 million.
