View of Chaumont

Chaumont is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Chaumont is located at 606  m above Frangy, about 20 kilometers northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends on a ledge on the south face of the Montagne de Vuache , above the valley of Le Malpas and high above the valley of the Usses , in the Genevois .

The area of the 12.38 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Genevois. The landscape-defining feature of the Chaumont area is the narrow, wooded ridge of the Montagne de Vuache (also known as Montagne de Chaumont), which is partly covered with rocks and faces north-north-west-south-south-east. The ridge sinks rapidly to the south and is separated from the south adjoining Mont by the gorge-like valley of Le Malpas . The gorge is traversed by the Fornant , a right side stream of the Usses. To the east of the ridge and the gorge, the community area extends into the wide valley of the Fornant. The part of the municipality, which extends far to the northwest, includes the steep western slope of the Vuache and the upstream high plateau. At 1101  m , the highest point in Chaumont is reached on the Montagne de Vuache.

In addition to the actual town center, Chaumont also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Le Malpas ( 470  m ) above the Fornant gorge between Vuache and Mont
  • Saint-Jean ( 483  m ) on the southern slope of the Vuache below the village
  • Chaumontet ( 640  m ) on the southern slope of the Vuache
  • Vovray ( 750  m ) on the southern slope of the Vuache

Neighboring communities of Chaumont are Savigny in the north, Minzier and Contamine-Sarzin in the east, Musièges and Frangy in the south and Chessenaz and Clarafond-Arcine in the west.

history

From the 12th century onwards, Chaumont was the center of a castle belonging to the Counts of Geneva . In the 14th century the town received certain rights of freedom. The fortress walls of the castle were razed in 1630. Chaumont was assigned to the newly created Canton of Frangy in 1860 ; before it belonged to the canton of Saint-Julien-en-Genevois .

Attractions

The medieval church of Chaumont has a 14th century choir, while the portal is from the 15th century. Another church is located in the hamlet of Saint-Jean. Ruins have been preserved from the former castle. The center is characterized by a group of town houses in the characteristic Savoyard architectural style from the 18th century. Also worth mentioning are the mansions of Château de Thiollaz and Château des Roches located in the vicinity of Chaumont.

In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 683 inhabitants in Chaumont). Since the mid-1970s, however, a significant increase in population has been recorded.

Economy and Infrastructure

Chaumont is still a predominantly agricultural village today . Chaumont is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

There are also some local small businesses. A large number of workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area as well as in the Annecy and Geneva-Annemasse area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached from the D992 departmental road from Saint-Julien-en-Genevois to Frangy. Further road connections exist with Clarafond-Arcine, Savigny and Musièges. The closest connection to the A40 motorway is around 10 km away.
