The Georgys Hut ( Rhaeto-Romanic in the idiom Puter Chamanna Georgy , Italian Capanna Georgy ) is a mountain hut in the Livigno Alps . It is located at an altitude of 3175 m above sea level. M. , 87 meters in altitude below the summit of Piz Languard , on the border of the municipalities of Pontresina and La Punt-Chamues-ch in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland . The hut is the highest mountain hut in the canton of Graubünden. The hut was named after the Leipzig painter Wilhelm Georgy .
The hut has a large terrace, a dining room and a warehouse for 24 people.
Origin of name
The hut was named after the Leipzig painter Wilhelm Georgy (1819–1887). Around 1850 he was a draftsman at the JJ Weber publishing house in Leipzig. At that time Georgy and the painter Emil Rittmeyer were commissioned with the illustration of the natural history publication Das Tierleben der Alpen by Friedrich Tschudi . The task became the occasion for longer trips in the Alps to deepen the knowledge of the mountain landscape as well as its fauna and flora. Between 1854 and 1858 he went to the Engadine. He lived in a hotel in Pontresina where he also met the governor Gian Saratz . A friendship developed between the men. Georgy told Saratz how sorry he was to be alone in the evenings. Saratz, even a gifted naturalist (he had in the craft of taxidermist be trained), Georgy took place during the next two years in his own family and discovered that he liked the role of host.
During this time Georgy liked to stay in the small hut on Piz Languard, where he got to know nature in a wide variety of weather conditions and did studies. His oil painting Bernina Group with chamois from Piz Languard is the result of a careful study of animals and nature in the area around Georgys Hut. In addition to sketchbooks, Saratz received the painting that still hangs in the stairwell of the Hotel Saratz .
