Gerhard Gruber (born July 1, 1928 in Prien am Chiemsee ) is a Roman Catholic theologian , apostolic protonotary and, with almost 22 years in office, was the long-serving vicar general in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising .

Life

Gerhard Gruber was born in Prien am Chiemsee in 1928 . He joined in 1947 in the seminary in Freising and later studied in Rome, where he in Germanicum lived and at the Gregoriana the licentiate in philosophy earned. On October 10, 1953, he was ordained a priest in Rome by Clemente Micara . Gerhard Gruber then obtained a licentiate and doctorate in Catholic theology . After pastoral care in Munich, the new Archbishop Julius Cardinal Döpfner appointed him his personal secretary for Council matters. He accompanied the archbishop to all meetings of the Second Vatican Council . During this time Helmut Hempfer was secretary for the affairs of the archdiocese, together with Gruber, a close associate of Döpfner. Even after this time, Gruber was still Döpfner's advisor for Roman affairs. In 1968 he was appointed vicar general as successor to Matthias Defregger and held this office under the archbishops Joseph Ratzinger and Friedrich Wetter until 1990. From 1972 to 1998 he was a member of the Munich Metropolitan Chapter and from 1988 its dean .

During his work for the Archdiocese of Munich, he campaigned - together with Ernst Tewes and Bernhard Egger, in particular for the introduction of the professions of community clerk and pastoral clerk in 1969. He was involved in the initiation, development and expansion of city pastoral projects in the inner city of Munich, such as the establishment of the Munich island under Marienplatz and the open offer of the inner city church St. Michael (Munich) ( five to five ; church without antechamber ).

In connection with the case of Peter Hullermann , who, although convicted of sexual abuse, was transferred several times to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, whereby he was still able to have contact with children, Gerhard Gruber took over responsibility for the failure of the leadership of the archdiocese in March 2010 whose vicar general he was in those years. From those around him, however, it was reported that he had been urged to assume sole responsibility in order to "take the then Archbishop of Munich, Joseph Ratzinger, out of the line of fire". He himself contradicted that.

He lived in Munich with his brother, the theologian, religious educator and pastor Elmar Gruber († September 10, 2011) until his death .
