Gerhard Hendel

Gerhard Hendel (born December 16, 1930 in Zwickau ) is a Germanist and cultural scientist with a focus on “Weimar Classics”.

life and work

Hendel's father was a train driver. Gerhard Hendel grew up in his hometown until 1938 and then in Rumburk in North Bohemia . He attended high school in Rumburk. In 1945 the family was expelled to Zwickau. In 1949 he passed the Abitur there, then began studying German and English at the University of Leipzig . He visited u. a. Lectures with Hans Mayer and Ernst Bloch . Above all, Mayer drew his attention to Gustav Landauer , and he continued to deal with Franz Kafka , Paul Celan and Paul Éluard . In 1954 Hendel passed the state examination and diploma with a thesis on Georg Gottfried Gervinus .

From 1954 to 1958 he was a lecturer in German language and literature at the workers and farmers faculty of the Martin Luther University in Halle . From 1958 to 1967 he was a research assistant at the Goethe National Museum of the National Research and Memorial Sites of Classical German Literature NFG in Weimar .

In this function Hendel published mainly on the history of the Faust material and on the memorials of the German classical period . Together with other people, Hendel initiated holiday courses for further training for teachers. He dealt critically with the medium of television, wrote numerous literary and art reviews . A friendship with Erwin Strittmatter began in 1961 . In 1964 he met Lev Kopelev for the first time.

From 1967 to May 1989 Hendel was City Councilor for Culture in Weimar. From 1990 to 1992 Hendel worked at the Cranachhaus , a cooperative of visual artists.

In 1975 and 1982 Hendel received the "Literature and Art Prize of the City of Weimar".
