Gerhard Krüger (computer scientist)

Gerhard Krüger (born July 9, 1933 in Melsungen ; † October 9, 2013 in Waldbronn ) was Professor of Computer Science at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and helped set up computer science teaching in Germany.

Life

Gerhard Krüger studied physics from 1952 to 1957 at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Humboldt University Berlin . He received his doctorate in 1959 with the dissertation "Detection of fast neutrons with spark counters" at the University of Giessen as Dr. phil. nat. with Wilhelm Hanle . From 1960 he worked at the nuclear research center in Karlsruhe . Since 1971 he has been a computer science professor at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) . From 1981 to 1983 he was Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science. In 1982 he founded the Institute for Telematics, the first of its kind in Germany.

In addition to his scientific work, Gerhard Krüger was also involved in university politics, including in the 1990s for the development of teaching in computer science at various East German universities. From 1985 to 1986 he was President of the Society for Computer Science .

He had been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 1995 and a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences since 1996 . He was also a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech .

Krüger was co-editor of the textbook and exercise book Telematik and author of numerous scientific publications.
