Gerhard Matthäus Friedrich Brawe , also Gerhard Matthias Friedrich Brawe (* 1745 in Verden ; † April 25, 1787 ibid) was a German physician and author.

As a young adult he was a member of the "Order of the Inseparable" - an academic society in imitation of Masonic customs . Brawe was initiated in Jena on April 21, 1765 and introduced to the second degree in May 1766. In Göttingen he rose to the rank of marshal on June 18, 1767 and secretary on October 18 of the same year.

He studied in his hometown and in Göttingen , where he received his doctorate on September 6, 1768 . He then moved back to Verden, practiced there and published several writings, of which one on ergotism , published in 1772, was the best known. In this publication he questioned the causal link between the disease and ergot . While Europe's rampant Ergotismus- epidemic in the years 1770 and 1771 he was previously authorized by the government in Stade by the authorities in Rotenburg an der Wümme - which, given the lack of doctors have been obliged - made efforts to ensure adequate medical treatment of the sick to treat patients from the villages of Visselhövede , Hiddingen , Neuenkirchen , Leverdingen , Delmsen , Sprengel and Ahausen . Later he was appointed court medicus of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in Verden .

At the beginning of the 1780s, Brawe made great contributions to the expansion of the “ Verdener Brunnen ” medicinal water source . So he had them bordered with ashlar stones and the first places to stay overnight were built nearby. At the spring, which has now mostly dried up, a memorial stone commemorates Brawe's achievements.

Remarks

  1. In Brawe's writing from 1772, some of the localities are given with names that differ from modern spelling: Vißelhövede, Huddingen, Lewerding and Delmßen. They were converted into the current spelling and linked according to geographical correlation.
