Life

Gerhard Philipp Heinrich Norrmann was a son of the bookbinder Franz Hinrich Anthon Norrmann (1720–1800) and his wife Katharina Elisabeth, b. Ramcke (1726-1798). The father's ancestors came from Sweden. Norrmann grew up as the oldest of eight children.

He visited the Johanneum in Hamburg, but there were several accidents so that his parents were no longer able to raise the payments for the further attendance of the school. In order to earn a living, he gave lessons in some of the first houses from the age of 15; here he taught and supervised schoolwork. In this way he was able to raise the financial means that enabled him to begin studying at the University of Göttingen in 1775 . In 1774 he left the Johanneum and attended the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg for another year . Here he met Professor Johann Georg Büsch , the head of the commercial academy. This influenced his desire to study law and history instead of theology, as his father wanted; Büsch offered him the prospect of employing him as a teacher at the commercial college after completing his academic studies.

In 1775, Gerhard Philipp Heinrich Norrmann began studying law, political science and history at the University of Göttingen. He heard lectures from Georg Ludwig Böhmer , Christian Friedrich Georg Meister (1718–1782), Johann Beckmann and Johann Stephan Pütter . Here in 1776 he joined the Masonic lodge "To the golden circle".

After completing his three-year academic course at the University of Göttingen, Professor Büsch gave him the post of second teacher at his commercial academy. This teaching institute was attended by the sons of the first trading houses of all nations; English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Swiss were to be found there. Several years later he was still in a friendly correspondence with the Swiss Karl Viktor von Bonstetten and the von Salis brothers . In the von Büsch house he made the acquaintances of the scholars Johann Heinrich Voss , Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock , Matthias Claudius and others.

Johann Georg Büsch also encouraged his early inclinations to study geography and statistics and, on his suggestion, Gerhard Philipp Heinrich Norrmann made the decision to write the geographic-historical handbook of regional, national and international studies , in three volumes of 1785 appeared to 1788, established his scientific reputation and the attention of Mecklenburg-schwerin rule Duke Friedrich Franz I woke.

In 1782 Norrmann was appointed sub-principal at the Johanneum. In 1789 Duke Friedrich Franz I appointed him full professor of history and political science at the University of Rostock , which was associated with the award of the title of court counselor . On December 17, 1789, he received his master's degree from the Philosophical Faculty there . PhD and also a Dr. phil. appointed hc. He was commissioned to lead the political and historical studies of the Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig of Mecklenburg-Schwerin when he was studying at the University of Rostock. A few years later, he gave private lectures on history and political science to this, as well as to the Hereditary Prince Georg of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and the later Grand Duke Paul Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Schwerin.

For the grand ducal government, the states of Mecklenburg and various corporations, but also for private individuals, he prepared expert opinions in political science and business matters, for example 1802 on the freedom of the grain trade.

1803/1804 he was rector of the University of Rostock and next several times dean of the philosophy faculty.
