The Mecklenburg Patriotic Association , one of the many agricultural associations in Germany founded around 1800, was founded in 1798 as the Mecklenburg Agricultural Society . After an initial low point in the club's history as a result of the French occupation of Mecklenburg, the company changed its name to Mecklenburg Patriotic Association in 1813 . The association existed for more than a century and was dissolved in 1934 under pressure from the Nazi peasantry .

history

Among the founders of the company, who met for the first time in Rostock on January 20, 1798 and dealt with agriculture and the development of new agricultural implements, were the landowner Hans Graf Schlitz (1763–1831) on Karstorff, District Administrator Gustav Dietrich von Oertzen ( 1772–1838) on Groß Many and the Rostock university professor, economist and agricultural scientist Lorenz Karsten .

Schlitz, Oertzen and Karsten formed the first board of directors (directorate) of the association, the first two as directors, Karsten worked as its (main) secretary (managing director) until his death. The early years of the association were closely linked (also in terms of personnel) to the Mecklenburgische Hagel- und Feuerversicherungs-Gesellschaft, founded in 1797 in Neubrandenburg (today: Mecklenburg Insurance Group ), which also emerged as a self-help organization of Mecklenburg landowners.

Friedrich Pogge , director of the Teterow district from 1835 to 1843

Until 1934, the Patriotic Association brought together natural persons (mostly landowners ) who had the aim of improving all branches of industry and, in particular, optimizing Mecklenburg's agriculture . Now the association has developed decentralized sub-structures in the form of districts .

Under the new name of the association, a much broader realignment of the association's goals took place from 1813, which were no longer aimed solely at optimizing agriculture, but now included all branches of industry in the country. Among other things, the development of agricultural equipment, the improvement of the credit system, the expansion of the rural education system, the support of the fire brigades , the optimization of sales opportunities for local products and the transport of small farms were followed.

In order to promote the economy in Mecklenburg, the association organized trade and industrial exhibitions. So for example, led Ernst Alban in 1838 its newly developed threshing machines , shredders , grinding mills , hand grist mills and grain cleaning machine on his farm Klein Wehnendorf a professional audience. But the horse race to Doberan , Güstrow and Neubrandenburg under the generic Landstallmeister and district administrator of the district of Demmin , Karl von Maltzahn are due to the activities and initiatives of the Mecklenburg Patriotic Association; just like the agricultural animal show under the direction of Friedrich Pogge in Güstrow. Successes in animal breeding were made known beyond national borders through these high-profile measures, which were also popular among the population.

From 1832, the association also awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in addition to monetary prizes to honor outstanding achievements in agriculture.

Structure, management and members after the founding phase

President of the association: Hereditary Grand Duke Paul Friedrich

President of the association in 1827 was Paul Friedrich , Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin region . First chief director was Colonel Graf von Osten Sacken and second chief director of the court and chancellery council of Wedemeyer. The Rostock professor and agricultural scientist Lorenz Karsten has been the main secretary since the association was founded. The most famous member was Johann Heinrich von Thünen (1783-1850), who became in 1811 and from 1818 to 1820 director of the Teterow district and from 1836 to 1838 the second chief director of the association. In 1848 Thünen was elected an honorary member.

The ordinary members were deployed to the following 13 districts (as of 1827): Neubukow  (8), Friedland  (26), Gadebusch  (18), Grabow  (25), Güstrow  (26), Hagenow  (19), Parchim  (17), Röbel  (17), Rostock  (51), Schwerin  (11), Teterow  (61), Tessin  (18), Wismar  (24). In addition there were members who had not decided on a district, foreign members (outside Mecklenburg) and honorary members. First among the external honorary members of the association was Prince Friedrich of Prussia . The most gracious protectors of the Mecklenburg Patriotic Association were the two Mecklenburg Grand Dukes: Friedrich Franz I , Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin , and Georg , Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz .

Publications

The work of the association was documented under the direction of the chief secretary and editor-in-chief Lorenz Karsten in the annual scientific journal, the agricultural annals of the Mecklenburg Patriotic Association . Among the best-known specialist authors were Thünen: Albrecht Daniel Thaer , Ernst Alban , Franz Hermann Müschen and Johann Jakob Nathanael Mussaeus (1789–1839).
