Gerhard Postel (born February 28, 1941 in Freimersheim ; † April 6, 2012 in Speyer ) was a German Protestant clergyman who felt particularly committed to environmental and nature conservation.

Life

After graduating from the Altsprachliches Gymnasium in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , which is now called Kurfürst-Ruprecht-Gymnasium , Postel studied Protestant theology at the universities of Heidelberg , Vienna , Marburg and Bonn . He also completed a partial course in zoology. Between 1968 and 1971 he was pastor at the Pauluskirche in the Protestant parish of Ludwigshafen-Friesenheim and then held the parish of Albisheim an der Pfrimm ; From 1976 to 1991 he looked after the parish in Nussdorf near Landau in the Palatinate . During this time he was involved in the purchase and renovation of the so-called peasant war house , which is a landmark of Nussdorf, as well as in the establishment of the building association and the historical working group.

In addition to working as a pastor , Postel also advocated environmental and nature conservation issues. From 1978 he was environmental officer of the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate , initially on a voluntary basis, from 1991 to 2003 full-time. After his retirement he worked in an advisory capacity for an environmental agency. He was a member of the board of trustees of the German Environmental Foundation and co-founder of the nationwide group Nature and Ethics .

In the German Federation for Bird Protection (today: Naturschutzbund Deutschland), Postel was chairman of the Palatinate District Association for twelve years. In addition, he was the founder or co-founder of various regional environmental organizations: Preserving and shaping (landscape and architecture), Rettet die Rheinauen , ANW (forest management), GNOR (nature conservation and ornithology) and the ecological hunting association of Rhineland-Palatinate . He was a founding member of Aktion Pfalzstorch and took part in actions to reintroduce greylag geese and lynxes in Rhineland-Palatinate . He resigned his membership in various advisory boards of the state government out of disappointment with the policy of the then Environment Minister Klaudia Martini , because she had legitimized the shooting of carrion crows .

Gerhard Postel lived in Freisbach from 1991 in the oldest completely preserved house in the former Electoral Palatinate , built in 1557 by Elector Ottheinrich as a forester and hunter's house; it was not destroyed in the War of the Palatinate Succession because it was then owned by the Count von Schaumburg, Field Marshal General Louis XIV.

Gerhard Postel died on Good Friday 2012 in Speyer.
