The Germerblättrige Stendelwurzen ( Epipactis veratrifolia ) is a species of orchid that belongs to the genus Stendelwurzen ( Epipactis ).

description

This perennial herbaceous plant reaches heights of 12 to 100 cm, in rare cases even up to 150 cm. This geophyte forms a short creeping rhizome as a persistence organ. The stem has three to four sheathed scale leaves . At the base of the stem there are three to nine narrow to ovate-lanceolate leaves that taper to a point, are 8 to 25 cm long and 1.2 to 6 cm wide.

The relatively loose inflorescence is up to 60 cm long, is covered with short hairs and contains four to 25 nodding flowers . The length of the bracts, which are longer than the flowers, is typical of this type of plant. The long-stalked, hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flowers have a short-haired ovary . The bracts are greenish in color with a brownish-red edge zone. The flowering period is between May and August. Reproduction takes place via cross-pollination.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40 or 60.

Distribution and location

The distribution area extends from southeast and southern Turkey along the Levant to the Sinai Peninsula . This flower can also be found on Cyprus and in the Middle East . Some specimens have also been found in northern Turkey and Iraq , Persia , Afghanistan and Pakistan as far as Nepal . There are also isolated occurrences in East Africa ( Somalia ).

This stendellum species can be found on spring meadows, banks, wet meadows and rocky slopes covered with water at altitudes between 200 and 2100 meters above sea level . Wet base-rich soils with a lot of lime are preferred.

Molecular mimicry

In 2010, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology reported that Germerblättrige Stendelwurz attracts hoverflies as pollinators by mimicking three chemical alarm substances of aphids. This form of mimicry induces hoverflies to lay their eggs next to the simulated aphids, as hoverfly larvae feed on them.
