Gernot Schley

Gernot Schley (born May 13, 1937 in Cosel , Upper Silesia , † October 29, 2006 in Gauting ) was a German director , screenwriter and non-fiction writer focusing on Africa, South America and the indigenous peoples living there and their threat.

Life

Gernot Schley grew up in Cosel / Upper Silesia and in Essen. He studied in Freiburg / Brsg. and Berlin. He completed his studies in German , philosophy , history and theater studies with a dissertation on Gerhart Hauptmann and the Free Stage in Berlin. He then began his professional career as a journalist , mainly at WAZ. After a short time he turned to documentary film and after a few years at Tellux-Film founded his own production company Projektfilm in Munich. He has made over a hundred documentaries and feature films as a director and screenwriter, especially for the broadcasters ZDF , BR and WDR .

Schley also wrote non-fiction books about the life of indigenous peoples and about development aid in Africa and Latin America.

Awards

In 1983, Gernot Schley received the 2nd prize of the media price development policy of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development for the WDR production Encounters in M'Kondedzi - pupils and helpers help on a school farm in Mozambique

He also received the International Environment Prize Prague (1992) and the Ambient Incontri Sacile Special Prize (1996).
