Gerold Wefer

Gerold Wefer (* 1944 in Jaderberg ) is a German geologist , founder and director of MARUM at the University of Bremen until October 31, 2012 .

Life

After primary school, Wefer was an apprentice and then a civil servant at what was then the Deutsche Bundesbahn . He graduated from high school in 1966 at the Oldenburg College . After his military service he studied geology - paleontology in Kiel and graduated in 1972 with a diploma. In 1975 he received his doctorate there. He then worked several times at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography , La Jolla , USA. In 1983 he completed his habilitation and in 1985 he became a professor in Kiel. In autumn 1985 he moved to the University of Bremen and was founder and until 2012 director of the DFG research center Cluster of Excellence MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences University of Bremen.

Gerold Wefer has specialized in marine geology and is primarily concerned with ecological issues in the border area between geology and biology. These include the sedimentation processes in shallow water , the ecology of benthic foraminifera (protists: algae, slime molds and protozoa), and the carbonate balance in boreal and tropical seas. He also works on environmental chemistry and the distribution of stable isotopes in calcareous organisms, climate development during the Holocene , particle flow (carbon and associated elements) in high latitudes and in the South Atlantic and the paleoclimate in the South Atlantic. He was involved in many expeditions with the research vessels Meteor (built in 1964, first West Africa in 1971), Meteor (built in 1986), Polarstern , Sonne (off Japan) and JOIDES Resolution (off Peru and Namibia).

In 2018 he received the Serge von Bubnoff Medal , in 2011 the Alfred Wegener Medal , in 2001 the Communicator Prize of the DFG and in 1983 the Albert Maucher Prize for Geosciences. He is an honorary doctorate from the University of Oldenburg and a member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . He is chairman of the House of Science Bremen and president of the Academic Society Wittheit zu Bremen .

As the head of MARUM, he kept commenting on science policy . Regarding the relationship between science and the public, he told the DAAD : "I see the dissemination of research results to the population as a matter of course."
