Gertrud Freedmann
Gertrud Freedmann , also Gertraud Walter-Freedmann, (born August 22, 1933 , according to other sources 1936, in Beratzhausen , Upper Palatinate ) is a German opera , operetta and concert singer ( soprano ).
Life
Freedmann was born as the daughter of Paul Hierl and Anna-Maria Hierl. She completed her vocal training in Munich and at the Augsburg Conservatory from 1955 to 1958 . She had her first engagement in the 1957/58 season at the Stadttheater Passau . This was followed by a two-year permanent engagement at the Mainz City Theater (1958–1960). In 1960 she was signed to the Bavarian State Opera as the "first soubrette" , of which she remained until the end of her career in 1980. There she sang an abundance of roles from the field of opera soubrette. Sometimes she also took on the role of lyric coloratura soprano. Since the mid-1970s she also appeared in Comprimario roles.
Her stage roles included, in particular, the three great Mozart soubrettes: Blonde in Die Entführung aus dem Serail , Despina in Così fan tutte and Papagena in The Magic Flute . She also sang Ännchen in Der Freischütz , Marie in Zar and Zimmermann and Gretel in Hansel and Gretel . Her repertoire also included roles in operas by Richard Strauss , a. a. Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier and Zdenka in Arabella . In the Italian subject, the page Oscar in Un ballo in maschera , Nannetta in Falstaff and the Musetta in La Bohème were among her roles. She also took on classic operetta roles, such as Adele in the Strauss operetta Die Fledermaus .
In 1967 she sang the role of Carolina in the opera The Secret Marriage at the Bavarian State Opera .
She appeared as a guest at opera houses in German-speaking countries. In the 1960/61 season she had a guest contract with the Komische Oper Berlin , where she sang Rosina in Giovanni Paisiello's opera Il Barbiere di Siviglia .
In September 1965 she made a guest appearance with the ensemble of the Bavarian State Opera at Opera Scotland in Edinburgh , as Despina in Così fan tutte (conductor: Hans Gierster ) and as chambermaid Anna in Intermezzo . In 1966 she appeared at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon as Blondchen, and in 1966 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as Sophie in Rosenkavalier . In February 1969, she sang Wellgunde in Wagner's Götterdämmerung at the Vienna State Opera for a short period of time . She performed in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Cologne, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Zurich. She also took part in a tour of Japan by the Bavarian State Opera in September 1974. She sang and a. the Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro (Tokyo, Bunka-Kaikan Hall).
She worked u. a. with the following conductors: Hans Knappertsbusch , Joseph Keilberth , Carlos Kleiber , Karl Böhm and Wolfgang Sawallisch .
Freedmann is married to Wilhelm Walter. The marriage resulted in a daughter (* 1972). After giving up her stage career, Freedmann lived in Wielenbach in the Weilheim-Schongau district , and later in Brannenburg in the Rosenheim district . In September 2014 she took part in the reunion of former members of the Bavarian State Opera.
Award
- Because of her artistic merits, she was appointed Bavarian Chamber Singer in 1970.
