Per Håkan Gessle ( pronunciation : [ ˌpæːʁ ˈgɛsːlə ], born January 12, 1959 in Halmstad ) is a Swedish musician and songwriter.

Life

Gessle is the son of a plumber who died of cancer in 1978. He played in a punk band called Grape Rock when he was young . After school he refused to do military service. He first became known in his Swedish homeland with his band Gyllene Tider (in German Golden Times ), who had a number one hit in 1980 with the song Flickorna pa TV2 . In 1985 he founded Roxette . In 1989 he and Marie Fredriksson , who died in 2019, became successful worldwide under the name Roxette . The song The Look from the album Look Sharp! gave Roxette first place on the US Billboard charts . With Listen to Your Heart (1990), It Must Have Been Love (1990) and Joyride (1991), all written by Gessle, Roxette repeated this success three times. With Roxette , Gessle also released the albums Tourism (1992), Crash! Boom! Bang! (1994), Have a Nice Day (1999), Room Service (2001), Charm School (2011) and most recently Traveling (2012) and finally Good Karma (2016).

In addition, Gessle was and is also active as a songwriter for other artists, such as Belinda Carlisle or the Leningrad Cowboys . As early as 1982, for example, he wrote the song Threnody for Frida's solo album Something's Going on . In the mid-1990s, he also released an English-language solo album called The World According to Gessle (1997), with which he was unable to build on the old Roxette successes internationally .

Today Gessle is one of the most successful Swedish musicians. In 2002 he was on the sampler The Song Ramones the Same - A Tribute to the Ramones with an interpretation of the Ramones classic I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend . He also released the song as a Maxi , with the reverse Sheena Is a Punk Rocker (also in the original by the Ramones).

In 2003 he released Mazarin, his first Swedish-language solo album since 1985 and took first place on the Swedish charts with this album and the first single Här kommer alla känslorna (“Here come all feelings”). After the release of "Mazarin" he went on tour in the summer of 2003. At the beginning of 2004, Gessle was awarded four Swedish Grammys - including the song of the year. In 2004 the 25th anniversary of Gyllene Tider was celebrated with the album Finn fem fel and a tour through Sweden, which with 492,252 visitors became the most successful tour of all time in Sweden.

On November 23, 2005 he released another English-language solo album in Sweden under the pseudonym " Son of a Plumber ", which is also called Son of a Plumber . The name is a reference to the fact that Per Gessle's father was a plumber. The album was released on March 27, 2006 in large parts of Europe and on April 28, 2006 in Germany.

On January 12, 2006, his 47th birthday, Per Gessle released an album with demo versions of all tracks on the Mazarin album .

In 2008 Vanilla-Ninja released an English cover version of the Swedish song Spegelboll by Gessle under the title Crashing Through the Doors .

In April and May 2009 he toured Europe with his album Party Crasher . In November and December 2009 he was on tour with Marie Fredriksson as Roxette as part of the Night of the Proms in 20 concerts in Germany. The 11th solo album "Small Town Talk" (released September 2018) was produced by Per Gessle in Nashville .

In addition, Per Gessle is a successful restaurateur. In Tylösand, not far from his hometown Halmstad, he is co-owner of a luxury hotel and successfully runs a beach club.

Per Gessle is married and has one son. He is an honorary citizen of Halmstad.
