Gevenich is a district of the city of Linnich in the Düren district .

location

The village lies between Glimbach and Kofferen in the north, Hottorf in the east and Boslar in the south.

history

Gevenich is first mentioned in a document in 888 and was a Carolingian and Ottonian royal estate in the Middle Ages . Here the document of Arnulf von Kärnten of June 13th, 888 is used, in which Gevenich is not mentioned. In this respect, this statement is incorrect. The document itself is considered lost. As an indirect source, however, it is understandable. This is a donation of 43 royal villas to the Aachen Marienstift . The document of Arnulf von Kärnten goes back to a document from Lothar II , which is considered lost.

The founding of the Gevenich Barbarian Brotherhood goes back to the plague epidemic in 1356, from which the village repeatedly suffered in the 16th century.

Gevenich belonged to the Boslar parish and was elevated to a parish on March 1, 1804. The villagers had usage rights to the Buchholzbusch, a piece of forest that stretched between Kofferen and Lövenich until the 19th century . From 1822 Gevenich was assigned to the office of Körrenzig .

At the end of the Second World War , the village population was evacuated in November 1944 in view of the air raids and the approaching front. The village suffered severe damage on the Rur front . American troops moved in in February 1945.

In 1950 and 1951 the primary school and church were rebuilt.

On July 1, 1969, Gevenich was incorporated into Linnich.
