32-year-old Lorelai Gilmore lives with her 16-year-old daughter Rory in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, where she runs the Independence Inn hotel. When the talented Rory gets the opportunity to switch to the elite private school Chilton and thus could fulfill her dream of studying at Harvard, Lorelai is unable to pay the school fees. In order not to deny her daughter this opportunity, she asks her wealthy parents, Richard and Emily Gilmore for a loan. Lorelai has had a complicated relationship with her parents since childhood, and after getting pregnant at 16 and refusing to marry Rory's father, the contact was almost broken. Her parents grant her the loan, but make the condition that she see Rory and Lorelai for dinner every Friday so that they can take part in their lives again. Meanwhile, in her last days of school at Stars Hollow High, Rory gets to know the new student Dean, who also seems to be very fond of her. The change of school is so shaky for her and she argues about it with her mother. At the first meal at the Gilmore house, Emily and Lorelai argue, and Rory learns about her grandparents' loan. Moved, she decides to go to Chilton.
2 | 2 | A classic false start | The Lorelais' First Day at Chilton | Oct 12, 2000 | Feb 25, 2004 | Arlene Sanford | Amy Sherman-Palladino |
Rory's first day of school in Chilton starts more chaotic than planned. After Lorelai overslept and has no more time to get her costume from the dry cleaner, she is forced to bring Rory to Hartfort in short jeans and combat boots. In the director's office, she suddenly meets her mother, who is shocked by this performance. Director Hanlin Charleston warns Rory that the standards in Chilton are very high and that it could so easily fail. Even the best in class Paris is not enthusiastic about Rory's appearance and fears her competition. While Rory tries to cope with the first day of school, she clashes several times with high expectations and Paris, so she accidentally destroys a model of her. But when Paris refuses to be helped after several advances on the part of Rory, Rory succeeds in using her knowledge to boot out Paris in class and to secure the recognition of some teachers. Meanwhile, Lorelai struggles with her mother's constant attempts to interfere, so she wants to buy a DSL connection and a parking space for Rory. Lorelai makes it clear to Emily that she has no right to make such decisions. In addition, a father of a Chilton student whom Lorelai and Rory met by chance that morning comes to the Dragonfly Inn and asks her out on a date. Lorelai turns down the offer and in a conversation with Luke he clearly shows himself jealous about it. After Lorelai picked Rory up from school, Rory reminisced about the first day of school with her mother and best friend Lane.
