Giovanni Gentile (physicist)

Giovanni Gentile jun. (Born August 6, 1906 in Naples ; † March 30, 1942 in Milan ) was an Italian physicist and professor of theoretical physics .

Life

Giovanni Gentile was born in 1906 as the third of five children of the philosopher Giovanni Gentile and his wife Erminia Nudi. In the same year the family moved to Palermo , where Gentile grew up. In 1914 the father was offered a position at the University of Pisa, and three years later in Rome, where Gentile attended the renowned Liceo Tasso . In 1923 he began studying mathematics at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa . In 1925 he enrolled in physics, but continued to attend courses in mathematics. In 1927 he finished his studies with distinction and went to the University of Rome for six months with Orso Mario Corbino and was assistant to Enrico Fermi in Rome . During this time he met Ettore Majorana and the two began an intense friendship.

In 1929 he won a scholarship and was allowed to study with Erwin Schrödinger at the Berlin Institute for Theoretical Physics, on whose theories he had previously published. During his stay in Leipzig in 1930/31 he was a visiting scientist with Werner Heisenberg, where he and Felix Bloch published a fundamental work on solid-state magnetism with the advice of Heisenberg. From 1931 he was professor of theoretical physics at the University of Pisa and from 1937 at the University of Milan .

In 1938 Gentile went on a study trip to Switzerland and Germany and visited Heisenberg, Walther Bothe , Peter Debye and Arnold Sommerfeld in Munich . In 1941 Gentile became a member of the Istituto lombardo di scienze e lettere . Gentile died unexpectedly in 1942 of sepsis caused by a dental abscess . Gentile was married to the art historian Maria Vincenza Bartalini.
