action

"This is the story of a German: We are in the post-war year 1950": seriously wounded, the young soldier Jürgen Godeysen returned to his homeland after the Second World War from a Soviet prisoner of war. Professor Gunthermann has already tried three times to remove the shrapnel from his skull, but had to postpone the life-threatening operation each time because the patient showed a lack of will to live. Now the professor tries a trick: after fate has passed a young girl who has been trying to find Jürgen Godeysen for a long time, he uses the stranger as a tool. She is in possession of the diaries of Jürgen's father Michael and is supposed to read them to the sick, which tell of the joys and sorrows of a fateful life. Michael Godeysen has put the words in front of his diary: "Because the heart of man is indestructible and eternal".

The first part, which begins on a day in May in 1897, describes the love of the former Uhlan officer and gifted horse breeder Michael Godeysen for the Berliner Lena and later for the Irish aristocrat Nicoline. Lena loves Michael very much, but has to part with him because, at the request of her parents, she will marry another, better off man. Nicoline, who is loved by Michael, is already married to Pat, an Irish aristocrat with whom Michael is friends. When Michael Nicoline confesses his love, she makes it clear to him that she only ever loved her husband. Although Pat Nicoline's beloved horse Abony deliberately rode to her death in a daring tournament and seriously injured herself in the process, it is clear to the young woman that she belongs by her husband's side. To make matters worse, Pat has joined the Irish freedom fighters and the Secret Service is now after him. Pat rejects the suggestion to leave his country with the remark that flight is not a way out and, moreover, he could not abandon his people. When Lady Nicoline sends a message to Michael that one must not lose his way, he leaves Ireland for home. As with the story with Lena, where the horse Bajar played an important role, the episode with Nicoline also features a horse, the mare Abony and a little later her foal Lena.

A little hesitant at first, but gradually becoming more confident, the girl reads the patient from the diary. She is the granddaughter of Pat and the Irish aristocrat Nicoline. Something like love for each other is slowly emerging in both people. When the girl, who also bears the name Nicoline, has finished the first part of the diary, it begins with the second.

“The fight for the son's life continues, but will his father's diary really have the healing power to save Jürgen Godeysen, who has been cheated of his faith? The second part will tell about it. "

The sequel describes the film My Father's Horses II. Part His Third Wife .
