Girolamo Ghinucci (* 1480 in Siena , † July 3, 1541 in Rome ; also Girolamo Ginucci , sometimes also called Genucci of Ascoli ) was an Italian clergyman, bishop , papal diplomat and cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

After starting out in the Roman Curia, Girolamo Ghinucci was appointed secretary to Pope Julius II and on October 16, 1512 Bishop of Ascoli Piceno . From 1512 to 1517 he took part in the 5th Lateran Council from its third session . On July 30, 1518 he resigned from his episcopate and became nuncio to Pope Leo X in England. King Henry VIII appointed him his advisor and ambassador to Spain for three years . Girolamo Ghinucci was transferred to the bishopric of Worcester on September 26, 1522 , but never personally took possession of this diocese. On September 10, 1523 he became administrator of the diocese of Malta , from this office he resigned on March 20, 1538. When Henry VIII broke with Rome in 1534, he was expelled from the Diocese of Worcester and deposed on March 21, 1535; However, he carried this title of bishop until the end of his life.

From January 7, 1538 to January 10, 1539 Girolamo Ghinucci was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals . Together with the Cardinals Giovanni Domenico De Cupis , Lorenzo Campeggio, Giacomo Simoneta, Gasparo Contarini, Gian Pietro Carafa , Giacomo Sadoleto , Alessandro Cesarini and Reginald Pole , he was appointed a member of a commission on January 7, 1538 that was supposed to prepare a general council . He was appointed administrator of Tropea on June 19, 1538. Together with the Cardinals Alessandro Cesarini and Giovanni Domenico de Cupis, he was appointed papal legate in 1538 with very extensive powers ( Latin legatus a latere ) to mediate a peace between Emperor Charles V and King Francis I of France .

On August 27, 1540 he was born together with the cardinals Giovanni Domenico de Cupis, Reginald Pole, Alessandro Cesarini, Giovanni Maria del Monte , Bartolomeo Guidiccioni , Marino Grimani , Girolamo Aleander de Motta , Nicolò Ridolfi , Gasparo Contarini, Gian Pietro Carafa and Marcello Cervini Appointed to a commission for the reform of the Roman Curia .

Girolamo Ghinucci died in Rome in 1541 and was buried there in his titular church, San Clemente .
