Giuseppe Patanè
Giuseppe Patanè (born January 1, 1932 in Naples , † May 30, 1989 in Munich ) was an Italian opera conductor.
Giuseppe Patanè was born in Naples as the son of the conductor Franco Patanè (1908–1968) and studied in his hometown. He made his debut there in 1951 at the Teatro Mercadante . From 1961 to 1962 he was chief conductor at the Linz Opera , then until 1968 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin . Further stations were debuts a. a. at La Scala in Milan (1969), at Covent Garden in London (1973) and at the New York Met (1978). He also worked as music director of the Arena di Verona (1983), as co-chief conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra (1982–1984) and as chief conductor at the National Theater Mannheim and the Munich Radio Orchestra (1988–1989).
Patanè suddenly collapsed on May 29, 1989 from a heart attack during a performance of Gioacchino Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He was taken to the hospital where he died in the morning hours of the next day. He and his wife Rita, from whom he was separated at the time of his death, had two daughters.
