Giuseppe Pioda
Giuseppe Pioda (born June 6, 1810 in Locarno , † August 31, 1856 in Turin ) was a Swiss architect and engineer .
Life
Giuseppe Pioda was the son of the politician Giovan Battista Pioda (born December 13, 1786 in Locarno, † June 29, 1845 in Lugano ) and his wife Teresa, daughter of Carlo Ghiringhelli from Bellinzona . Of his ten siblings are known by name:
- Giovanni Battista Pioda (born October 4, 1808 in Locarno, † November 3, 1882 in Rome ), politician;
- Luigi Pioda (born September 9, 1813 in Locarno, † June 1, 1887 ibid), politician;
- Paolo Pioda (born December 20, 1818 in Mechelen ( Netherlands , now Belgium ), † 1892 in California ), professor at Berkeley .
His maternal uncle was the Benedictine monk Paolo Ghiringhelli .
He attended school in Bellinzona and studied at the philosophical-mathematical faculty of the University of Pavia .
After returning to Locarno, he designed his most important work from 1837 to 1838, the government building of the cantonal government from 1839 to 1881 during its relocation periods in Locarno, from 1893 to 1917 the building was used as a bank and since 1917 the electricity company Società has been located Elettrica Sopracenerina in the building. In 1839 he finished the choir of the Church of San Antonio in Gordola designed by Francesco Meschini (1762-1840) . In 1844 he worked out plans for the San Carlo building ensemble in Magadino , which were not implemented because it was decided to use the plans of the architect Giacomo Moraglia (1791–1860) for the late Classicist central building of the church.
From 1840 to 1845 he was responsible for the canton's roads, railways and ports on behalf of the canton of Ticino ; During this time he was appointed artillery lieutenant and took part in the Sonderbund War in 1847 .
He designed the Villa Balli in Locarno, which is now the San Carlo retirement home.
From 1849 until his death he was interned in the Turin mental hospital .
Giuseppe Pioda preferred the classicist style and gained a certain importance for Ticino.
