Waymarking on Glyndŵr's Way

Glyndŵr's Way is a long distance hiking trail in central Wales . It leads from Knighton to Welshpool for 217 kilometers through the hill country of Mid Wales. The trail opened as a National Trail in the UK in 2000 . It leads over hills and plateaus, past lakes, through farmland and through small villages and towns.

Route

Glyndŵr's Way runs from Knighton first north-west to Machynlleth , from there (north) east to Welshpool. Since the path describes a generous arc, the starting and ending points are only around 50 km apart. This is where you come across the more popular Offa's Dyke Path . Two daily stages complete the circular hike.

Although the route is signposted in both directions, the Knighton to Welshpool route has established itself as the preferred direction.

The trail is open to backpackers. Not all accommodations are directly on the way.

Naming

The path is named after Owain Glyndŵr (1350-1416), who led an uprising against the English occupiers in the 15th century . In the 14th century epidemics and a repressive regime drove the Welsh to revolt against the English occupiers. He was led by Owain Glyndŵr, a descendant of the Welsh princes of Powys , who brought much of Wales under his rule and established a Welsh parliament at Machynlleth. Machynlleth was thus the capital of Wales for a short time.

After defeats from 1408 Owain Glyndŵr went into hiding. Even if the uprising did not change the Welsh situation lastingly, he remains a national hero who is also seen as the reincarnation of the legendary King Arthur .
