Godehard Lietzow
Godehard Lietzow (born November 18, 1937 in Schneidemühl , Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia , † August 6, 2006 in Berlin ) was a German artist and gallery owner.
biography
Godehard Lietzow was born on November 18, 1937 in Schneidemühl, the second son of a police officer. After fleeing and stopping in Mecklenburg, the family moved to Springe am Deister, southwest of Hanover . He attended school and high school in Hanover, where he also graduated from high school in 1959. He did not comply with his parents' wish to become a teacher. Instead, he began studying painting and drawing at the Werkkunstschule Hannover . His teachers included Johann Georg Geyger and Gerhard Wendland .
In 1960 Godehard Lietzow went to Berlin and continued his art studies at what was then the University of Fine Arts (HdK, now UdK ) with Fred Thieler . At the same time he took German studies at the Free University. He had been very interested in literature since the mid-1950s. The talent for formulating and writing led Lietzow to write texts and reviews about art (exhibitions) and films in Berlin daily newspapers ( Der Kurier , Telegraf , Der Tagesspiegel and Die Welt ) as well as on the SFB , RIAS , Deutschlandfunk and Deutsche Welle from 1963 ( Berlinale ). In 1967 he met his future partner.
An outpatient art trade that had been in operation since 1969 led to the establishment of the Lietzow Gallery in 1970. His own artistic activity had been inactive since the beginning of the journalistic period. Lietzow had created a forum where he could find talented and at that time largely unknown artists such as B. Peter Ackermann , Louis Caballero, Heinrich Richter , Hermann Schenkel and Holger Bunk sponsored and presented their works to the public with exhibitions.
During this time he also wrote numerous texts on the works of the artists, which were published in the gallery's catalogs, and later also texts about his own work.
In 1973 he took up the thread of his own painting and drawing again, in addition to the gallery activity, which he gave up in 1979 and since then has lived exclusively as a freelance artist. First, small-format drawings were created, a symbiosis of watercolor and ink drawing, from which the directions of painting and drawing then developed independently. His preferred technique in painting was watercolor, which then became the basis of his acceptance as a painter. Lietzow's search for further possibilities of expression then led him - in addition to the drawings, which were always created parallel to painting - to the photo. In a very intense phase he captured pictures with his camera, which he then called light pictures - "pictures of light and color". Another technique piqued his interest - the collage (which he called sticky pictures). In 2005, around 300 works were created in exclusively postcard-sized formats. It should be his last work.
In all phases of his life, however, he continuously and privately cultivated his love for poetry and prose. From the early 1950s until shortly before his death, he put numerous poems and stories on paper.
Godehard Lietzow died on August 6, 2006 in Berlin.
