from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Richter (born May 15, 1920 in Inowrocław , Poland as Henryk Richter ; † June 8, 2007 ) was a contemporary German painter and graphic artist.

Life

In the last days of the war in 1945, Richter fled to Berlin after losing his right arm; therefore he trained himself to paint with his left hand. 1948–1955 he took up studies in Berlin at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste with professors Karl Hofer and Hans Orlowski , which he completed with a master class diploma. In between he lived with the painter Jochen Senger for a few months in Paris as part of a French state scholarship in 1953, after which he worked in Spain. During this period he also married his wife Mila, with whom he has two sons. In 1963 Richter had his first meeting with Günter Grass . In the three following years he worked on the illustrations for Grass' " Die Blechtrommel ", which was published in 1968 by Luchterhand-Verlag (Berlin / Munich).

In the period from 1965 to 1970 he was a frequent guest for longer stays with Theodor Ahrenberg , a naturalized Swiss art collector and patron, with whose family a close friendship developed. In Ahrenberg's studio in Chexbres on Lake Geneva , Richter created numerous works that were subsequently shown as solo exhibitions in renowned Swiss and Swedish galleries and in Swiss museums. In 1968 he met the art historian and first director of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Werner Haftmann , who made it possible for him to have a comprehensive solo exhibition in his new building that same year.

In 1970 he moved to a studio on Montparnasse in Paris , where he lived and worked until 1972. During this time he made the acquaintance of Iris Clert , one of the most prominent European gallery owners. He then settled in Seignelay ( Yonne / Burgundy ), but also lived temporarily in Cannes in the south of France . Since 1991 Richter lived and worked in Berlin again, where he died on June 8, 2007.

Heinrich Richter was a member of the German Association of Artists . He had numerous solo exhibitions and participations in exhibitions in Germany, France, Sweden, USA and Japan.
